Huge thumbs up for Hundepension Meissholz & URZ Tierspital

We had a pet owners worst nightmare recently.

Our 3 chocolate labs went to the tierheim at Kemptthal as usual whilst we went for our 3 weeks in the sun to Thailand over xmas and new year. On xmas day, so a week into the holiday, we got a call from the kennel to say 1 was sick and on the way to the tierspital, and the vet would call later. The tierspital called after about 20 mins to say he had a severe stomach torsion and needed emergency surgery. They said it was an expensive procedure with a distinct chance he wouldn't make it, but they wanted to give us the option to let him go, or for them to operate.

The 1st was never going to happen and we okayed the op, and started to look at return flights. After an agonising 3 hours wait they called back to say as he was in such great shape and health everything went better than she hoped and he had survived the 2 and a bit hour op', but the next 12 hours would be critical as he's 11 and had had a great strain on his heart. They told us not to be to hasty on rescheduling flights, and the would call un in 12 hours or sooner if anything happened, which they did, and confirmed he was still very sick, but off the danger list.

He spent 5 days in doggy ITU sedated and wrapped in a compression suit. We got a call every day from the vet treating him with his progress, and she said he was doing amazingly well, as when he came in they really did expect the worst possible outcome due to the severity. After 9 days in the spital they said he was good to be discharged. We explained the situation, and they said better he stayed there rather than go back to the kennels, certainly until his stitches and staples were removed... So he did.

We picked him up when we got back, and found him happy as ever, with a whole host of new friends, nurses used to take him on rounds, 1 even asked for to share email so we could send photos of him.

So whilst wishing it had never happened, a huge, huge thanks to Sarah at the kennels for spotting a problem with Rolo and getting him to the hospital so quickly (remember it was xmas day). We also can't praise highly enough the skill and care of the tierspital angels who looked after him, and it was their expertise that means Rolo is still with us.... thank you.

Finally to Kath Bart, who took time out of her holiday to go and see him.... I won't forget that.

He had to go back for another small operation today, and 3 nurses and the vet came out to see him, all of whom fussed over him and he was as happy as could be. He went off with them without looking back and tail wagging like Yoda wields a light sabre, so his comfort and trust in them was evident, and if Rolo is happy.... so are we.

So glad to hear that Rolo is on the mend now - what a fright this must have been for you!

I'll join you in singing the Tierspital's praises - we pet owners are indeed fortunate to have such a fantastic resource here. Not only highly skilled with access to the latest research and equipment, but most importantly the staff - the professors, vets, nurses, animal techs, and students - are caring and kind, doing their best to put the animal and owners at ease in what are usually the most difficult situations.

I'm also so glad to hear that the folks the the Tierpension were so quick to take action - sounds like you have very good people there. This is exactly what one needs in a pet carer - emergencies can happen at any time, one needs to be prepared and able to handle whatever might arise.

Hope Rolo's op today is successful and that he continues to do well - we'll keep our thumbs pressed for your lad.

So true MC.

Here are some shots of him, on the left of the non-airbrushed pic taken by friends of ours.

He's getting on a bit now, but FC Zürich wanted to give him a trial in goal.

He wasn't to happy about the compression suit apparently

Nice to have a positive story on EF instead of the usual moaning.

So glad that Rolo is on the mend - we dog lovers can empathise with the worry that you must of gone through - thanks for sharing.

No dog is. But after surgery sometimes it is necessary. Cassie was very miserable with her post surgery attire recently.

Thanks for sharing this experience. I know some kennels ask owners if there is someone here who can be contacted in case of emergencies. Not everyone can be easily reached on holiday.

Hope Rolo makes a full recovery.

Oh goodness - I don't think anyone can do 'Woe is me' as well as a basset can. :) Hope Cassie's convalesence wasn't too difficult, and that she is feeling better now.

How did Rolo's second op go, PG? Still have our paws crossed for your gorgeous guy.

Thanks for asking MC.

Got a call yesterday from the tierspital mid morning to say his op was delayed due to an emergency admission. Got a call at 4 to say everything was well, but because he was taken late they wanted to keep him in. We are leaving to get him now, and he will have to go back in 9 days to get these stitches out.
