Huge thumbs up for Hundepension Meissholz & URZ Tierspital

We had a pet owners worst nightmare recently.

Our 3 chocolate labs went to the tierheim at Kemptthal as usual whilst we went for our 3 weeks in the sun to Thailand over xmas and new year. On xmas day, so a week into the holiday, we got a call from the kennel to say 1 was sick and on the way to the tierspital, and the vet would call later. The tierspital called after about 20 mins to say he had a severe stomach torsion and needed emergency surgery. They said it was an expensive procedure with a distinct chance he wouldn't make it, but they wanted to give us the option to let him go, or for them to operate.

The 1st was never going to happen and we okayed the op, and started to look at return flights. After an agonising 3 hours wait they called back to say as he was in such great shape and health everything went better than she hoped and he had survived the 2 and a bit hour op', but the next 12 hours would be critical as he's 11 and had had a great strain on his heart. They told us not to be to hasty on rescheduling flights, and the would call un in 12 hours or sooner if anything happened, which they did, and confirmed he was still very sick, but off the danger list.

He spent 5 days in doggy ITU sedated and wrapped in a compression suit. We got a call every day from the vet treating him with his progress, and she said he was doing amazingly well, as when he came in they really did expect the worst possible outcome due to the severity. After 9 days in the spital they said he was good to be discharged. We explained the situation, and they said better he stayed there rather than go back to the kennels, certainly until his stitches and staples were removed... So he did.

We picked him up when we got back, and found him happy as ever, with a whole host of new friends, nurses used to take him on rounds, 1 even asked for to share email so we could send photos of him.

So whilst wishing it had never happened, a huge, huge thanks to Sarah at the kennels for spotting a problem with Rolo and getting him to the hospital so quickly (remember it was xmas day). We also can't praise highly enough the skill and care of the tierspital angels who looked after him, and it was their expertise that means Rolo is still with us.... thank you.

Finally to Kath Bart, who took time out of her holiday to go and see him.... I won't forget that.

He had to go back for another small operation today, and 3 nurses and the vet came out to see him, all of whom fussed over him and he was as happy as could be. He went off with them without looking back and tail wagging like Yoda wields a light sabre, so his comfort and trust in them was evident, and if Rolo is happy.... so are we.
How do you know if a Frenchman has been in your garden.... your rubbish is gone, your dog is pregnant.... but at least your cabbages are pest free
