rabies vaccine - how often?

Hello

We (my dog and me) are just from the vet where we (dog Ava of course ) got the rabies vaccine. It was the third one, since Ava is two and a half years old (16.12.2013).

Unfortunately, we were one day late - it is one day more than a year from the last vaccination. My mistake...

The vet told me, that because of this delay, he can't vaccinate my dog with a three year vaccination. She will have to be vaccinated twice the next two years in the row. Only after this three years she can be given a three years vaccine.

Ok...the punishment must be educational, but I am angry because my dog will be given two additional doses of vaccination because of my mistake.

Nevertheless...I would just like to ask what is the system of vaccination in Switzerland so that I will not miss something in future

Thank you!

Re: rabies vaccine - how often?

Whisky Tango Foxtrot?

Is your vet concerned that your dog might not have sufficient antibodies, given that this is the first 'adult' vaccination? If so, why not have a titre test done to check before going with an altered schedule?

---

I have had to delay vaccinating several times with several dogs, due to health issues present at the time of the scheduled booster.

No problem, we just vaccinated with the three year vac the whenever the dog was healthy enough to do so.

Now - since that was technically a 'new' vac I could not cross borders until the waiting period had elapsed - 21 days now within the EU. So be it, we never travel anymore anyways.

Ok...the punishment must be educational,
This statement worries me greatly. Medical treatment is not, and should never be a 'punishment'. If that is the message you are hearing, walk away. Now.

I hope that 'punishment' is not behind your vet's recommendation, that there might be a misunderstanding. Please go back to him and clarify why he recommends this new vac schedule.

Your vet should work with you to come up with a vac schedule that is appropriate for your dog, with a view to his/her overall health. Your dog's health and welfare must be the first and foremost at all times. If you are uncomfortable with the current situation, you might consider getting a second opinion from another vet.

---

Rabies in Switzerland:

First, Switzerland is considered rabies-free. Thus the rabies vaccine is not mandatory within Switzerland. An unvaccinated dog is 'street legal' as long as the dog stays within Switzerland and does not cross borders.

(However, kennels, dog schools, dog care facilities are free to require current vaccination as a condition of participation.)

To cross EU borders, the dog must be vaccinated on the schedule recommended by the manufacturer of that particular rabies vaccine. If the mfg's manufacturer's recommended schedule is broken then you must wait 21 days after re-vaccination before crossing borders.

The three year vac is the most common one used in Switzerland.

Tsavenc,

Just to clarify, as I have just noticed your profile location...

Are you now in Switzerland, and was this from a Swiss vet?

Or are you still in your home country, and this was a vac needed in preparation to move to Switzerland?

Re: rabies vaccine - how often?

Hm...the punishment needs to be educational was a joke. This is a kind of a proverb in Slovenia.

I am glad that in Switzerland three year vaccination is most common. We will probably be traveling a lot in and out of Switzerland, so we will vaccinate her.

I can't use you advice about titre test. It is a law in Slovenia. The dog should be vaccinated three times in a row - three years in a row and each time no more than a year should pass between. The third vaccination can be the three year vac. Because we were late one day, we didn't get the three year vac. So simple
I was happy to tell the vet he will not see us any more anyway.

We will move to Switzerland with a vaccinated dog and than probably proceed with vaccination every three years.

Yes, we are still in Slovenia. Vaccination is mandatory.

OK, that makes sense now.

When you get here you will need to see a vet within 10 days of entry in order to do the AMICUS database registration - this would also be a good time to sit down with the Swiss vet and discuss a sensible vaccination plan for your dog.

Good luck with the move.

Re: rabies vaccine - how often?

Like meloncollie said, once you are in Switzerland, find a vet and discuss the issue. I would also go for a titer test before adding another shot.

Here is some more information:
