Dog tied out in front of store kicked to death

A 12 year old Bernersennenhund was kicked to death while tied out in front of a store in Herisau:

http://www.nzz.ch/panorama/tierquael...-hund-ld.82449

In years past it was a common sight: dogs tied out in front of stores, waiting for their owners to finish shopping.

But it is no longer safe to leave your pooch unattended, folks, those days are gone. Even in small villages, even in Switzerland.

Leave Fido at home when you shop, please. For his sake.

Horrific. Some "people" beggar belief. I'm all for an eye for an eye in this instance.

Re: Dog tied out in front of store kicked to death

I really don't know what people get out of these type of behaviour. A couple of recent, less drastic cases in the UK - a horse was shot over a hundred times with paint balls and a couple of kittens were "coloured in" with permanent marker pens.

As for this case - I'm with RufusB on this - kick them to death too. It's exactly what they deserve.

Re: Dog tied out in front of store kicked to death

Poor, poor dog.

---

According to the article, the police believe the person who killed the dog has a psychological illness.

Which means that if he is ever found then there would likely be little in the way of repercussions.

---

But a tragic cautionary tale for all dog owners. Never leave your pooch unattended, anywhere.

Re: Dog tied out in front of store kicked to death

It is shocking on how many of the addiction clinic patients have dogs. They are always a few outside barking/crying/weeping, while their masters are getting their fix.

I'm not sure if they are suggested for therapy, but my judgmental side says that if you can handle drug addictions, you shouldn't have a pet.

A couple months ago one of these dogs outside the clinic was run over by a tram. Truly sad.

Unfortunately I come across similar news on a daily basis that make me think what kind of world do we live in? To imagine being that dog owner and just stopping for a quick shop that ends in the dog's death... infuriating and heart crushing

Your post got me googling for a half-remembered bit o' info:

Yes, many of those living on the street have dogs - not surprising, as a dog provides the companionship that is often lacking in the person's life.

To help those in need to better care for their dogs, in Zürich Pfarrer Sieber's foundation supports the 'Gassentierarzt' project.

http://www.swsieber.ch/bereiche/gass...tellt-sich-vor

They regularly visit places where the homeless gather, offering advice on caring for the dogs and providing basic veterinary services at a low cost.

Those involved in this project have my deepest respect.

(Should you ever see something that concerns you, perhaps you could contact the 'Gassentierarzt' project? Maybe they can try to keep an eye out...)

Re: Dog tied out in front of store kicked to death

What a wonderful project. Maybe there can be more of them around the country. From what I could observe homeless people were very good to their pets, rather letting themselves starve or freeze than their pet. They are family after all. Which reminded me of this story (the pet survived thankfully)

Hardly comparable IMO.

Mosquitos have it coming to them, any way, but I've never managed to kick one. They target Little Rufus. Poor kid spends the summer months smelling faintly of citronella. The gods bless Avon Skin So Soft: if it's good enough for the SAS...

+1.
People are appalled that someone could kick a dog to death but then go eat chickens whose beaks have been seared off and they've been tortured by living dismal lives crammed in stacked cages, covered in each others excrement.

mmm.....

poor dog, and chickens

There are dogs tied up outside the shop in our village on a regular basis. The shop is on the main road in the village and is surrounded by houses and an apartment building directly across from the shop.

At the front of the store there are glass windows looking out onto the street and there is a small area to sit and have coffee.

There are pedestrians, cars, cyclists, the bus....

In the past, though not for quite awhile, I have left a dog outside. Sometimes 2 of them or all 3. I wasn't doing a big shop, just dashing in for fresh bread.

It is difficult for me to imagine someone having the opportunity to carry out this horrible act in our village without the risk of being seen. I am certain dog owners in my village will continue to leave their dogs outside the shop. Some of these dogs bark at anyone who is nearby...maybe they would frighten off a potential attacker.

I often see dogs tied up outside Coop at the train station in Baden. I would worry about someone stealing a dog. I do think given the steady flow of people there it would be impossible for someone to attack a dog there.

I agree it is better to be safe than sorry and probably best not to leave a dog unattended. That poor dog and what an awful shock for its owner.

You later post that the person has psychological issues.

A few years ago someone in Basel, also with mental issues, took a car and drove at random cyclists, killing some, before crashing and being caught.

These events are random - I think your comment is not warranted.

Whether a random event, inappropriate behavior, or malicious targeting - it matters not. Either way I firmly believe that it is not safe to leave a dog unattended.

A dog left tied out is unduly vulnerable, it cannot escape from a (real or perceived) threat.

We have to be realistic about the human world we bring our dogs into, and that means choosing safety first - for the dog, for those around the dog - at all times.

Shocking! Bernese Mountain dogs are normally such lovely natured animals. Clearly the perpetrator is disturbed. Hope they get caught before they end up doing this to a person.

I know you're an animal lover and are clearly upset by this horrible story -- but I do think it's an over-reaction to say that you have to avoid taking your dog with you when you go to the local shop, or at least avoid leaving it tied outside. The alternatives -- having to ensure you never go to the shop alone, or leaving the dog at home -- must be worse than the small risk of having this experience repeated.

The perpetrator sounds like he had severe mental problems, so he is just as likely to attack the dog while it's being looked after by someone outside the shop.

It's an unpleasant story but let's keep a sense of proportion.
