A woman in Schaffhausen was found to have made at least 15 trips to smuggle around 50 puppies in, crossing at various Swiss borders. The puppies were mostly Chihuahuas and Prager Rattlers.
Apparently she was selling the dogs online. And apparently, a good number of naive folks were taken in.
I know I sound like a broken record warning puppy buyers of the rampant battery farming and illegal puppy trafficking that goes on in Switzerland - yet people keep falling for this evil activity.
So once more with feeling:
Only buy from a responsible, ethical breeder, after having done due diligence on the breeder.
A responsible ethical breeder is one who requires you to undergo an assessment as to your suitability to take on a dog, one who requires you to meet him/her several times - and one who invites you to his/her place to meet the dogs, opens up health records and is happy to discuss health issues referring you to the vet as well, encourages you to see the socialization program in action, and welcomes
all your questions and due diligence efforts.
The same goes for those looking to adopt from a rescue, as sadly the battery farmers and puppy traffickers now pose as rescuers.
Again, do your due diligence on the rescue, look for the same things as you would in a breeder and check the charity registration
if applicable. Above all, do not fall for a sob story, as this is what the puppy traffickers play on. They themselves cause the misery that they use to 'hook' naive would-be adopters in - and responding to that only perpetuates the cycle of abuse.
Be aware that if a dog is brought into Switzerland illegally it can be seized. And if not vaccinated it can be, and in many sad cases has been, ordered euthanized.
So..... Augen Auf Beim Hundekauf. And eyes open when adopting, too.
