2016 Average (Private) Pet Care Cost Thread - your input needed!

I've been wondering lately how, or if, prices for private pet care are changing. My suspicion is that they are, but my dataset is limited so I thought I'd open this thread to get some broader input.

I thought it might be helpful both for those who are seeking pet care and those who are providing pet care to share what you are paying or asking for various types of care models.

So to give us a picture of the current market, would you add your current experiences? Please list the type of animal, a description of the type of care provided, your general location, and of course prices.

(Excluding kennels or professional Hort care, as prices for that kind of care are generally listed on the company's website.)

---

I'll start, thinking of the Ausserschwyz/Zürichsee area:

Dog care/cat care in the client's home, including staying overnight:
CHF 200 per day has been the average for many years. Perhaps more if there are special requirements, or many dogs in the house.

Cat/small critter care where the sitter pops into the client's home to feed and check on the cats:
CHG 25-50 per visit. Mileage charged.

Dog care in the sitter's home including overnight:
CHF 50-100 per day, depending on the dog's requirements, whether the sitter is taking in only your dog or whether there will be other dogs cared for at the same time. If overnight, on the higher end.

Dog walking:
CHf 25-75 per walk, depending on what is required. If the dog must be walked singly or has special needs, towards the higher end. Mileage charged.

Scanning Petsitting24 shows that most carers are asking ca. 25 per hour - but what is offered is all over the ballpark, so not quite helpful in drawing up a coherent picture.

So over to all y'all. What are current prices in your area for the various types of care? And, do you think prices are changing?

You are very fortunate to have neighbors (friends/family) who are willing to help. Many of us are not so lucky, though, and so paid care is the only alternative.

Hence this thread.

I pay chf35 per day for a pick up/walk/return dog walking service.
The rate is for an hours walk with multiple dogs, however he's never out for less than 2.5 hours due to all the collecting/dropping off.

Re: 2016 Average (Private) Pet Care Cost Thread - your input needed!

Any other experiences y'all would care to share?

I'm especially interested in what may start to happen now that (I assume*) a private sitter will no longer need the SKN. I saw a small jump in prices when that was enforced, as you would expect - mostly that clients were picking up the cost of the courses - but would be interested in seeing if prices change as providers enter the market without that 'seal of approval' to reassure clients.

* This is an assumption on my part, based on the fact that owners will soon no longer need the SKN and the regs were that a sitter needed the same qualification as an owner. I've seen nothing official addressing commercial care providers, though. The old rules are in place through end of the year, hopefully more specifics will come out soonish. (As always, when in doubt, ask the cantonal Veterinäramt.)

Re: 2016 Average (Private) Pet Care Cost Thread - your input needed!

My regular sitter charges 20CHF an hour, we are in the Zurich area. She will be moving soon so we are searching for a new sitter, so this thread couldn't have come at a better time. Our dog is a 2 year old Golden Retriever.

My husband and I wanted to go to London for a day and a half in January so we interviewed a prospective sitter from Zurich who has not done the SKN course, but she plans on doing it soon. She quoted us 660CHF for her staying in our home, walking our dog 3 times a day and staying with her the entire day and a half without leaving her alone...

If only you lived on the other side of Switzerland

Mind you, if you have a nice place ande a comfy bed - we could get our neighbour to look after the cats for a couple of bottles- and we can come and look after that gorgeous doggie ... now we are dogless. Good refs available (no skn).

660CHF for her staying in our home.
Yikes.

And here I was wondering if 200 might not be enough anymore, but 660 is... yikes.

For 660 per day I hope she held some other veterinary/behaviorist qualifications, and a list of gold plated client references to boot.

None of the above, however she has grown up with dogs, horses and cats.

Thank you that is so kind of you to offer! On Saturday we are meeting one more sitter who also has a golden retriever and lives in Zurich who might be able to watch our doggie if we end up going to London.

Wow.

No qualifications and a daily rate that translates to 158K.

TIS.

(At least I hope she was duly set up as self employed and not expecting you to hire her as an employee, or working under the table.)

Re: 2016 Average (Private) Pet Care Cost Thread - your input needed!

I used to pay 30-45 chuffs per "half day" (2 pm - 6 pm on working days) of sitting including at least one 1 hour walk for my canine daughter. I had three different sitters, one was a qualified dog trainer, one had skn and one had no qualifications. I found them all on petsitting24 and both my dog and I were extremely happy with the service they provided.

For one-off dog sittings they would charge 10-30 chf per hour.

Which brings up a question:

I have finally gotten around to registering with Petsitting24. However, they seem to require me to post a job ad, rather than allow me to simply contact sitters whose profile matches my needs.

(From browsing it is obvious that few sitters offer what I need, hence my reluctance to post a public job ad.)

I've not yet upgraded to the premium account, though - I'm reluctant to do so until I know if I can contact a sitter without posting a public job ad.

Did you have to post a job in order to use the service?

I've written Petsitting24 but haven't heard back from them so I thought to ask about your experience...

Yes, they try every trick to make you go premium...

The way to get around this is to post an ad and deactivate it immediately. That's what I did

I must add that I registered with petsitting24 something like 3 years ago so it might be that they figured this out in the meantime so the trick might not work...

let me know if you do it because this means that a dream job exists
as I quite like walking (also with a dog), I could take 2 dogs and make 6 walks a day, making 880 CHF per day. This could be done 30/31 days per month because you don't really need a weekend with such a job, making 321200 CHF per year.

alternatively, you could hire 2 people for 60k per year to do the walks for you...

Re: 2016 Average (Private) Pet Care Cost Thread - your input needed!

We are very fortunate that our neighbours look after our cats when we are away, but if we are away at the same time, the cat sitter charges CHF25 a day. He is qualified to pet sit - mainly looks after dogs but will look after most animals. He runs a long stay kennels as well.

As for vets, my male cat was mauled by a fox 2 weeks ago. His face and neck was severely injured. 1 night in hospital, surgery and meds cost CHF435 which we though was incredibly reasonable considering the extent of his injuries. The follow ups have thus far been included in that cost.

The cats will be going for the vaccinations on the 25th, I will update this post with those costs then.

She is not set up as self employed. For the right person we don't mind hiring and going through all the necessary paperwork, however when someone has such high rates you would assume they would be self-employed. Since her rates excludes insurance and AHV contributions.

I have had both good and bad experiences with Petsitting24. It seems that there are many sitters (not all) who are just looking to make quick money. On one occasion I have interviewed a sitter who stated on her profile that her hourly rate was 20CHF, when she came to our home and met our dog and we discussed her hourly rate she then said it is 25CHF, as soon as she left our home (less than 5 minutes) she sent me a message that she can start immediately and that her hourly rate is now 30CHF. This would be 30CHF an hour for not walking our dog, just staying with her for 2 -3 hours in our home while I ran errands or went to a dentist appointment. She would not charge any mileage since it turns out she is actually living on the same street as I am.

There are some great sitters on Petsitting24, but they are extremely hard to find. We found our current sitter there she genuinely loves dogs, however she is leaving soon.

Have you considered a kennel? Not all kennels are the same. A young dog might really enjoy a weekend with some canine friends.
