Kittens pooping under bed

Hi everyone,
I have four little 6 week to old kittens that cute, healthy, active and feeding well. However, recently we found that only two of them are using the cat litter box and the other two are pooping under our bed. Does anyone have any advice on what to do? Will they grow out of it?
Thanks so much!

Well, why don't you poop under their bed to teach them a lesson?

Re: Kittens pooping under bed

Maybe there are not enough litter boxes for the amount of cats in the house? I would try to put a makeshift litterbox under your bed, where they are used to poop and once they are used to do it there, gradually move the box to a more suitable location.

That is probably the problem. I would not put the extra litterbox under the bed though.

This seems so obvious. Keep the bedroom door closed.

Just be thankful that it is under the bed, and not on the bed

Re: Kittens pooping under bed

You should try putting them in the litter box every once in a while when you think it has been a while since they last pooped/peed.
Like Curly said I also wouldn't recommend putting another litter box under the bed...

Re: Kittens pooping under bed

Another thing might be to clean the spot under your bed thoroughly to get the smell out. Even if you cannot smell it any more, the cats still can and if it smells like a loo, for them it probably is a loo. Bleach (Javelwasser) and/or floor wax might help there, depending on what your floor is made of. You might also want to check, where they pee (UV light).

Anything with a citrus scent works rather well. Most cats seem to hate citrus.

LOL, isn't that a given - cats or no cats?

You mean, ferociously scrubbing the space underneath your bed several times a day? Well, TIS, so why not

Actually I meant giving that carpet a darn good clean and then keep the cats OUT.
Anyway - who has carpets anymore?

Ha ha. My family had a good laugh over that!

Unfortunately when I have to be out of the house, I have to keep the kittens and their mother in the bedroom which has an attached bathroom where their litter box is. And the bedroom had carpeting. So I have no choice but to do some scrubbing a few times a day. I've also tried putting all the kittens in their litter box a few times a day..... seems to work with two kittens but not the other two. Thanks so much for all your advice!

Re: Kittens pooping under bed

Shut them in the bathroom if it has a connecting door. If not then get a piece of wood or plastic tall enough that they can't climb over it and block the doorway with that. If you have a house what other rooms might be possible? Indoor laundry room? Winter garden? Garage if there's no car kept in it?

Alternatively, block access to under the bed with other stuff. If they can't get under there they can't poop there.

Have you tried other forms of cat litter? My parents-in-law cat would only go if there was wood shavings in the box. He wouldn't use it if anything else was put in there.

Re: Kittens pooping under bed

No garage - please, without natural light

But yes, some cats don't like modern cat litter that sticks in your paws. We only use wood pellets nowadays, for wood burning stoves- they love the smell and the natural feel underfoot.

What are you going to do with all the kittens? (intend to sell them via EF perhaps- ah well at least you have the right number of posts now).

Re: Kittens pooping under bed

Depends on the garage - ours has windows so maybe the OP's does too.

And they're at the age where they can be popped out into the garden for a little while under the OP's and momma cat's supervision. Assuming she'll let them. Our cat in the States would have none of it and as soon as we put a kitten down on the ground she picked it up and took it back inside.

They may prefer to do their business outdoors. Our cats have, even when the weather was bad they'd still pop out to "go" and then come back.
