Cat adoption in Bern. Anyone know of any animal shelters?

I have a cat shaped hole in my heart I would like to fill.

I've been moving around a lot the past few years with work and uni, but now I know im going to stay in one place for a while I really want a pet again :-)

Does anyone know of any animal shelters in the Bern area? Even if its a bit of a drive into the Bern oberland. Would prefer to adopt (as opposed to get a kitten) because there are too many abandoned animals out there.

I know with dogs there is some sort of permit you need, is it the same with cats? Even if there isnt a permit for cats I imagine it will be pricey, back in Australia you need to register with the local council, have a microchip and then pay any initial vet bills like immunisations if needed, and then the actual adoption costs.

OH, and any suggestions for pet insurance would be greatly appreciated :-)

Schöne Ostern!

Re: Cat adoption in Bern. Anyone know of any animal shelters?

First check that you're allowed to have a pet at the place you live, not all rental places allow them. Get it in writing if you can.

Use the following website which covers all the cantonal refuge centres.

https://www.tierdatenbank.ch/de/tiere.html

Filter for cat and Bern canton and see what comes up.

There will be adoption costs, though you don't need to register a cat or have it microchipped but it's a good idea to do so. Also be aware that some refuges only allow you to adopt as "keepers" and retain the ownership of the animal themselves. This means they would still have a say in any major decision concerning the animal.

I never bothered with pet insurance as my cat was too old at the time to qualify (8 years old max then). Instead as we have a post office account I simply put a set amount into that account each month to cover emergencies/spending of all kinds. It also earns a small amount of interest each year.
