cat aggressive after cattery??

Hi I am hoping someone might be able to offer some advice ....

We have just picked my 5 month old Maine Coon up from staying in a cattery for a week. She seems as normal but is being very aggressive, she is happy to be stroked and picked up but seems to just run and pounce at me and the kids when we are just sitting and watching TV, proper claws out to the face, without even interacting with her. She even hissed and clawed at me which I have never seen her do before.

Before the cattery stay she was very placid - I have 3 smallish kids and she is lovely with them and very tolerant

The lady at the cattery said she was fine and happy and that she put her in with another cat for company as she was howling a lot and that worked out for her.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? I m very sad that I have done something (putting her in a cattery) that has affected her so badly

Could this be a temporary thing, how best should I deal with this.....

What do you expect? You completely abandoned her with strangers for a week.

Re: cat aggressive after cattery??

Maybe the cat that shared was a bit aggressive and this is why as she was feeling threatened.

But at a few months old I would not expect her to give you a bad time for leaving her - the odd time when I had to leave my dog she would not make eye contact with me, face the wall and ignore me for a couple of days as a punishment - she used to do that if I had to take her to the vet...

Re: cat aggressive after cattery??

Was this the first time see had left the house? I have several cats myself and this sounds like anxiety which can trigger play aggression. Try using Feliway plug-in as I find this helps. You can also get the spray that you can use on her bed etc (but not h cat). How much time do you play with her? If she is an indoor cat only you will need to reduce her energy level through play time.

When our cats returned from the catery they were always much nicer for the first 24 hours, being so happy to be home. After that, it wore off and they reverted to being cats.

Sounds like the OP's was traumatisse and I guess will recover with some TLC...

Re: cat aggressive after cattery??

She is a little calmer today but still clearly pi**ed off
I am glad I did put her in for a short time as we will go away in the summer for 2 weeks, and now i will try to find someone who will be willing ti have her in their own home rather than put her to the cattery again.

DO people generally offer such services? It would be a perfect solution she is a great company cat and loves people normally!!

Haha just kidding, they will adjust soon again and continue to ignore you on a daily basis. Do not pay too much attention to them, they're like little spoiled brats.

Re: cat aggressive after cattery??

We used to leave our cat at home and the neighbours would come and feed her. Her response on our return was to use a bed as her toilet.

Re: cat aggressive after cattery??

I didn't know catteries existed, it doesn't seem like a good idea, it would be best if you can find someone to come to your house 1 hour every day and feed it, change the litter and play with him. Cats are territorial and don't like change, they're not dogs.

Re: cat aggressive after cattery??

Of course they exist, same as dog kennels and often at the same establishment - at least in the UK. The few I've looked at over here though were just one big room/loft with all the cats in together - not necessarily ideal unless your cat is used to mixing with others.

zurich99 some threads to have a look at:

The Feliway may be worth trying. I assume you've only had your cat for a couple of months or so - so the change from being with mum, just getting settled in with you and then being uprooted again may have caused the upset.

And it could just be the cat. My cousin had a cat that used to hide under the sofa and attack peoples' ankles as they walked by.

Re: cat aggressive after cattery??

thanks for the tips, she seems to be much better today, unfortunately we already had this spring break booked when we got her (as we tend to book trips back home well in advance) I wasn't keen to leave so early but its just how it happened.
I have noted her disgust and will plan accordingly in the future!

Re: cat aggressive after cattery??

Oh, how i miss my cats!!

I put them in the cattery once for two weeks. The lady sort of complained that one of them managed to open the window to get out into the run part every night at 2 am in February.

They sulked for about two days, but slowly realised that the bed was much more comfortable than the couch and reposessed it!! And returned to being the purring furry annoying critters they had always been.

I do remember how embarrasing it was in the taxi taking them home, with their yowling like a bad opera singer!! Jesus, you'd have thought I had abandoned them to go off on a tropical holiday.... oh, yes, now I think of it.... I did!!

This could be simply because the neighbours did not clean her litter box often enough..

Me too.

I had similar when we first moved over here. Our cat came a week after us and I drove to Geneva airport to collect her. Boy did I get an earful all the way back for leaving her with strange people in a strange place who then put her in this strange, noisy thing that went up in the sky. For an hour and 20 minutes it was non-stop then 10 minutes before I arrived home she decided she'd told me everything and finally gave my poor ears a rest.

Cats are very attached to their territories (more than to us their human friends I suspect!) so the best option is to have a cat sitter visit your place 1-2 times a day. We have one and she is like the most important person in our lives Try googling or looking at the board at the vet or local animal shelters.
