My cat has been run over

Yesterday afternoon someone ran over my cat. My son was the unfortunate person to find him. Paddy had either crawled or been thrown over the fence and had terrible
Injuries.

I just don't know how anyone could leave an animal is such a terrible state. Are they supposed to report it to the police? It is a road traffic accident and they would know they would have hit him.

I rang someone from animal disposal yesterday evening but I assume they won't collect him till Monday. Its incredibly hard knowing he is lying in our garage like that, also the hygiene risks concern me .

Any advice would be gratefully received

Darcy

Re: My cat has been run over

I'm so sorry for your loss.

We lost our cat last year. He had also been hit by a car. Somebody found him, took him to a place where his chip was read and his body kept frozen. He contacted us and we were able to retrieve our cat 10 days later and bury him in our garden.

There are regulations on how deep a pet's grave needs to be to prevent other animals from digging it up. We planted a tree on top.

Digging a hole as deep a required with just a shovel (I think 150 cm) is not that easy but maybe something that could be done today if you have a backyard.

Hello,

Thank you for your kind words.

We rent our house so I don't think burial is an option sadly. Our Landlord is not the most understanding of people at the best of times.

I will look into cremation. I might have a small memorial tree though, that's a lovely idea.

I am so sorry for your loss. It is terrible to lose a pet, especially so suddenly. I really feel for you.
Regarding cremation, there is this helpful post from Meloncollie..

Darcy1, so sorry to hear about your loss.

Yes, iirc they are supposed to stop and report it since it's possible the animal could be saved if treated immediately. No comfort for you at this sad time though.

I just checked online and read that the community Rickenbach has a Kadaverraum where cadavers of small pets can be left at any time

Re: My cat has been run over

Darcy, I am so very sorry.

I'm a tad hazy on geography over your way, are you near Rüti?

Tierkrematorium Dicentra will pick up 365/days per year, you could call them:
http://www.dicentra.ch/en/services.html

It is always heartrending to lose a furry friend, all the more so when it comes as such a shock. I hope your son is OK, a terrible thing for a child to find.

---

As to legalities:

Yes, it is an offense to hit an animal and not report it. If the driver cannot report the accident to the animal owner he/she is required to report it to the police. Technically, there could be consequences for failing to report, and if the driver did not stop to try to help an injured animal potentially a finding of Tierqualerei if the animal was left to suffer.

https://www.tierimrecht.org/de/recht...tier-zb-katze/

Are you feeling up to dealing with the police? If so, I'd suggest making a report.

That said, sadly in such cases, as with so much of Swiss animal protection, there does not seem to be many resources put into enforcement. If the driver is unknown the police might not to do much other than take a report.

Nonetheless if you are feeling up to it, I'd advise making a report. Perhaps there might have been a witness, perhaps the driver did the right thing and made a report him or herself.

---

Again, I am so very sorry. You and your family are in my thoughts.

Hello Carlasmom,

Thank you Meloncollie for your lovely words.

We live in Esslingen near Egg. I think what has made its so much worse is how my son found him,we don't know know how long he had been there or if he had suffered. My son who rarely gets emotional about anything is in absolute bits.

I will contact the police later today but I'm struggling to keep myself together.

Thank you again for your lovely words.

Wait until Monday, their is no hygienic risk, put the cat in a bin bag and leave it in a cool place, not necessary to refrigerate for a short period (less than 48 hours)

Re: My cat has been run over

Hi Darcy1
Very sorry to hear about your cat.

We had our dog cremated a couple of months ago.
www.dicentra.ch were telephoned to arrange to collect him. He was cremated at their small animal crematorium in Ruti, kanton St Gallen. Our pet's ashes were then spread in their memorial garden and we were told we could visit the little garden anytime.
The business end is collection charged per km for the distance to collection and cremation charge per kilo weight of your pet. Both were reasonable rates

Re: My cat has been run over

When I ran over a cat one rainy winter night many years ago, it ran away. It took 30 minutes of searching before we finally found it, sheltering under a parked car in a pub car park.

It ran across a busy dual lane road and I did not see it.

I was surprised how far it ran away by itself after being struck. It was also surprising that it did not feel like I'd hit anything at all. The car was unmarked.

We took it in a box to the nearest emergency vet. It died on the journey and the vet was unable to find a chip.

If it's some comfort, rather than being uncaring, the driver may not have even known they killed a much loved family pet.

Thank you for your comforting words.

I would like to think some one moved him gently.Just a tragic way to end his little life.He would have been three years old in a few weeks time.

I should also add that Dicentra Pet Crematorium is on a bus route just on the outskirts of Ruti. Their building is about 4 mins walk from the 'Pilerhof' bus stop. So it's easy to visit

I burried one of my cats in the forest near by. I believe it would be a better good-bye for your kid this way.
