The weird/funny/amazing thing my pet did today...

Hello all,

I thought I create a more fun and amusing thread where we can post something our pets have done that puts a smile on our face or makes us laugh. Something that gives just a little bit of positivity in our lives. Can be either big or small

I will start:

I was walking Arrow (my Siberian Husky) and during my walk I noticed a mother and father were trying to get their child to stop crying. The little boy was having some melt down. The mother saw us as an opportunity to distract their child to not cry. "Look at the doggy!" they pointed. So I stopped and brought Arrow closer to the child. (he loves kids). After a small exchange of "Hellos", the boy stopped screaming but tears were still rolling down his face along with snot and other body fluids. Arrow sits wagging his tail not knowing much about the situation. The boy reached out to touch Arrow, and Arrow licked his hand then gave him his paw to shake. Parents were amazed, the boy laughed, and Arrow got a nice taste of salty tears for the day. And that was the day that Arrow helped a small child from crying.

This is my, what I think is a cat, but I'm not sure what he thinks he is... anyway, he is obsessed with his 'Birdy' and plays fetch. We can do it all night long. He brings me nothing but joy.

Re: The weird/funny/amazing thing my pet did today...

Great thread!

My amazing thing happened not today, but a few weeks ago. Nonetheless:

After our walk I opened the car, put my keys and phone on the boot floor, told Hooligan and Heffalump to jump in. Fiddled around a bit, then closed the door - and as I did realized I had left the keys and phone inside. Just as I went to open the door, Heffalump The Clumsy sat on the key fob, locking the car.

Dear doG - a locked car, two dogs inside. No phone to call for help.

After a moment of panic the solution hit me: Time to put Hooligan's brilliant sheltie brain to practical use. Fortunately the window was open a crack so she could hear me.

Hooligan is a master at targeting. This is an exercise where the dog touches something, with a nose, paw, whatever, on your direction. We've been doing targeting variations for years as part of her 'brain training' bag o' tricks.

So with clicker in hand we started free shaping to get her to touch the key fob with her paw.

Less than five minutes later, Hooligan unlocked the car door.

Moral of this story: You never know when those silly parlour tricks we teach our dogs might come in handy.

Downside: Hooligan, always one to figure out how to work the angles, now sees a key fob as fair game for treat begging back chaining... but hey, that's one trick I think I'll keep on reinforcing.

---

Anyone else have a trick with unexpected real world application?

Traubert,

I know we all talk to our cats "with a silly cat voice" but that was rather OTT!!

Lovely cat.

He's some famous radio- or tv-announcer (or a politician?) and doesn't want us to recognize his voice

My kitten, Talitha, has recently mastered the art of jumping onto the rim of the bath tub and walking around it while I take a bath.

This morning, she slipped and fell in the tub... thankfully I'd just finished draining the water away.

Made me laugh on a blue morning...

Mine used to do that - fell in once. She did NOT like licking the bubble-soap out of her fur - although they had been so much fun pawing at from the rim

One of mine was mesmerised with water. Sitting for ages watching a dripping tap etc. (I would let it drip)

He fell in the bath. Not pleasant for either of us!! He looked like a drowned rat covered in bubbles and I had some rather interesting scratches on my thighs.

But he still came back, and did it again!! And again and again...

Re: The weird/funny/amazing thing my pet did today...

My late, and much missed cat, learned how to open the kitchen cupboards. Despite all the hype about 'cats will do anything for dreamies', his favourites were Coop meat sticks, and he'd push the Dreamies out of the way to reach them at the back of the cupboard. This photo is from one of his 3am assaults on the treats cupboard. We previously looked after a neighbour's gorgeous Maine C*** cat in the UK, and she would open every cupboard and drawer looking for meat sticks.

Re: The weird/funny/amazing thing my pet did today...

Attached is a cute and daft photo of our sprocher (springer /cocker) spaniel called Benji. He's very loving, but completely daft. We dare not ever let him off the lead again after the last time, lost for 4 hours endlessly chasing ducks up a river. All we saw of him the last time was a black and white blur heading upstream flushing the birdlife out from in front of him. The call of the wild....

Retrieved not by us but by a kind, dog loving passing motorist... who also brought him home and dropped him off at a neighbours and then drove on without a word....

My wife says its because if there is any sort of wind, the wind flies in through one ear and detaches all the common sense modules (not that he has many to start with) and then whistles out the other side

***

The daftest /oddest thing I have seen in Switzerland is the prevalence of dogs in bags, smallish & small dogs that spend most of their lives being carried around in a handbag. Never seen it before, totally weird.

Wildwarp,
your dog is extremely adorable. My dog sounds like he would do the same in the same situation. he loves to chase birds, although he won't hurt them.

Re: The weird/funny/amazing thing my pet did today...

didnt happen today but I still crack up:

in summer whenever I walk to the terrace door I open it and the cat uses that door instead of the cat flap. My mom was over and she walked towards the terrace door, didnt open it up however. Low and behold, the cat decided to try to jump through the glass (he didnt hurt himself except for his pride), but it still makes me smile when I think of his look at my mom 'well why arent you like any normal person/cat servant and open the door for me???'

I absolutely love about my second cat: she is such a morning sunshine. I get up and she is all talkative, running around my legs, tail up and just makes me smile.

My horse also has some funny ideas: she s 170cm so hard to miss, but when I try to put the bridle on, she will turn her head (so as not to look at me) and pretend that if she doesnt see me, I wont see her...I always giggle at that
Or she will try to 'sneak' up on me really slowly and pretend she magically appeared there when I hold a carrot in my hand, unfortunately she wears horseshoes so I can hear every move

Do you see this most often on trains?

Small dogs must be in a bag/carrier in order to ride for free on most trains, per SBB rules. Hence the prevalence of said bags. This has been the rule for many years, but for much of that time largely ignored. It seems to recently be more regularly enforced, fines handed out for those whose ticket-less dogs are traveling au natural.

Mine have all been too large to qualify for free rides, bag or no bag, so I didn't learn about this until one day when the ticket controller came by with a measuring stick to check all the the dogs in the carriage.

But most I've seen hop out of the bag once out the train doors, I've not seen too many carried around. Maybe a city thing? Again I could understand a tiny dog in a crowd, as I once saw a small dog stepped on in a rush hour crush at the HB.

(Owner of several disabled dogs, I'll fess up: When Haifisch grew too wobbly to do the family mountain hikes we stuffed him in a purpose-built backpack and kept on trekking. He loved it, far better than being left at home, and very good for his mental well-being. He still got a chance to pop out and bumble about every time we came to a flat-ish spot, though.)

Yep, on the train to Arosa, a good number of years ago.

Good thing we had already trained the Wesenstest exercise where a stranger approaches swinging a stick in a threatening manner...

I can't get over how funny this is. XD. I don't know if I can carry my 30kg husky on my own when he is half my body weight. But if I could, I would probably do the same. I think the Swiss figured out the loop hole and placed a height limit.
