Taking a dog to Switzerland

I have relatives in Switzerland and was hoping to get some advice on whether we can take our dog with us when going to Switzerland. What are the requirements for taking an animal with us? We live in the UK.

Re: Taking a dog to Switzerland

Depends on the dog. Is it microchipped and has a European passport with rabbies jab?

Going back to UK is more difficult than going out.

Re: Taking a dog to Switzerland

Thank you, he is microchipped but he doesnít have a passport as far as I know (we only got him recently). Iím happy to get one if needed though. We would only be able to take our dog if there are no issues taking him back to the UK. We would be travelling through France.

Would it be best to speak to the vet to discuss this?

Also am I right to think that his European passport would no longer be valid when the UK leaves the EU next year? Do we know yet if the rules for travelling with pets are going to change?

Re: Taking a dog to Switzerland

Here is the interactive tool to help you understand what is needed to bring your dog to Switzerland; follow the steps, you will see what you need to do:
http://blv.bytix.com/plus/dbr/default.aspx?lang=en

So yes, you need an EU Pet Passport.

Be aware that cropping and docking are illegal in Switzerland. There is an exception to the ban for tourists but additional paperworks is needed. If your dog is cropped or docked you need to contact the BLV for additional information. Contact details here: https://www.blv.admin.ch/blv/de/home...n/kontakt.html
If you have questions and don't speak German or French, write in English. The BLV is generally willing to correspond in English.

Be aware that this explains federal regulations. Additionally each canton enacts it's own dog control laws, so depending on which canton you are going to visit there might be some additional issues if your dog is one of the banned or restricted breeds.

So - what breed is your dog, and where are you planning on visiting?

---

As Odile says, getting the dog back to the UK reqires a bit more attention to the process. Follow the DEFRA guide to the letter. Be aware that the steps need to be done in order, this is where some people go wrong. It's not difficult to do, but you have to do it as prescribed.

How the Pet Passport scheme will play out post Brexit is anyone's guess at the moment. My guess is you will need to follow the same rules as low risk rabies third countries do now. But until all that is negotiated, we are only guessing.

Re: Taking a dog to Switzerland

No-one knows what will happen with pet passports in the future, post Brexit (or not ) - and I can tell you that the masses of Brits inSW FRance and Spain are VERY concerned about this- as they take their dogs back and forth all the time.

When are you thinking about coming- as rabbies vac has to be done 3 months before travel for Switzerland.

To enter Switzerland it's now 21 days after administering a valid vac, so the dog could travel on the 22nd day.

(If the dog's vaccination schedule has never lapsed, that is the dog has been continuously covered by a valid vax, the dog can travel at anytime, even immediately after a booster.)

Re: Taking a dog to Switzerland

I would also suggest you talk to a vet in Switzerland to organize the follow up before you depart.
