Bringing cats to Switzerland [from USA)

Hi all,
does any of you have the experience of bringing family pets/ cats to Switzerland from the US?
Could you share me your experience? I got confused reading some information over the internet. Both cats are up to date with their shots and microchipped.

Thanks a bunch.

These may help.

Make sure the microchip is readable by European readers, not all of them are.

oh wow, thanks a lot.

To my understanding, the US being non-rabies free country creates already so many confusing paper works. I'll have the microchips looked at then.

We did it the other way around, from UK to Switzerland and then Switzerland to USA.

Don't know if you're planning to do it yourself or if a relocation package is involved but we used these guys on both occasions and they were tremendous : http://www.acepetmoving.com/en/about-us.html

Very friendly and caring. T.I.S. though, so not cheap!

Forgot to mention but we had our cats chips checked when they arrived in the US and they were compatible. From what I've read though that isn't always the case so worth getting them checked.

Bear in mind that if the chip isn't readable, you'll need a new one and the rabies shots will have to be done again. That will delay things.

Hi all :)

I am moving to Switzerland in a few weeks and will be bringing my cat with me from the UK. She has a pet passport with her micro chip and rabies details, so hopefully initial entry will be okay. I was wondering, however, if there is anything I need to do to declare her or register her once I get to Zurich?

Also, does anyone know if it is possible to transfer her passport from a UK one to a Swiss one once I arrive? I want to make sure she is okay to move freely within the Schengen area post Brexit...

Welcome to the forum and soon to Switzerland. :)

Not really. Unlike dogs, there's no required registration for cats, but it's a good idea to have it done anyway just in case your cat gets lost.

Not sure, but a vet should be able to possibly transfer the data from the UK passport to a Swiss one.

Use this checker to make sure everything's done right.

Before or after Brexit ? Will the pet passport be valid after that ?

When we brought our cat from Canada, we walked through the red (something to declare) zone at the airport and they checked her microchip and glanced at her paperwork. That was it.

Find a local vet you like and register you and your cat there. Sounds like you'll be travelling rather than keeping the cat in a flat all the time so ask them to put your cat on the Anis list as Medea Fleecestealer suggests, they can be ID'd this way via their chip if they go missing, there's a registration fee for this.

Normally you'd hope "UK" pet passport could be fine post-Brexit whatever shape it takes as it's not a national document but just certification provided by a vet and in time your new Swiss vet will keep the document up to date, ie once they take over the vaccinations and put their stamp/signatures on it... But to be totally sure once you move to Switzerland you can ask your new local vet to start afresh, it's less a transfer but they can copy the details across and this way there's zero risk... and your cat gets a very Swiss red passport :msncool:

Thanks so much! I am travelling over on Friday, but still keen to get her passport (and my driving licence) sorted before Brexit nears!

Do you happen to know when bringing cats through the airport what the protocol is? Do I just need to show her passport to the immigration officer? We are coming over initially as tourists to sort some stuff out, but will be travelling to Austria and Germany before returning likely via train to live within the next few weeks.
