Importing parrots from non-EU country to Geneva

Hi everyone !

We would be moving to geneva from UAE in June along with our two Indian ringnecked parrots. As per local regulations they do not need any CITES. I have checked the SWISS REGULATIONS and they need a vet certificate and need one of the four conditions listed in the form to be met by th birds. 30 day quarantine or 10 day quarantine or just vaccination and re-vaccination. I hope my understanding is correct. Do we need any ring or microchip?
Is there something that I’m missing here?
Has someone recently imported any birds from non-EU countries?

I would really appreciate any help!
Thanks 🙏🏼

To be sure about CITES you need the Latin name of your species. There are very few birds not found on appendix I or II. If yours are not listed, there may still be export restrictions in place with birds on Appendix III. CITES is not a local matter, but a world-wide issue, so a listed animal needs BOTH export and import certificates.

Since avian flu, the import of birds has become far more complicated. Even if you are on the same flight as your birds I would use the services of a pet shipper because if you get something wrong there could be serious consequences.

I highly recommend using this company. They can provide support on all aspects including airline approved carriers for your birds.

Clients who were moving from UAE used their services and were very satisfied.

One of your challenges will be finding permanent housing which will be ready for your birds immediately upon your arrival with an appropriate cage. You cannot take your birds to any bird kennel here as contact with other birds is initially strictly forbidden.

Re: Importing parrots from non-EU country to Geneva

I imported an African grey parrot from Singapore (which was on the CITES I at time of importation). I handled all paperwork alone and did not go through a pet moving company. You just have to be very sure of the requirements of both exportation and importation as well as fill in paperwork Swiss authorities recognize. My suggestion is to have rings attached to your birds for easier identification and avoid microchip (can be a dangerous procedure). If I remembered correctly, they had a form for the vet to fill up and not just any document created by the vet. I moved my birds to Zürich which does not have a quarantine facility for birds so the quarantine will have to be done in the origin country. Good luck with your birds! I’m happy that there will be more medium to large size parrot owners here in Switzerland. People look at me weird whenerver I take my grey out for a stroll.

There is nothing dangerous about inserting a microchip in a parrot. It is done under anaesthetic by an avian vet. Microchips are far safer than leg rings which can cause a multitude of problems.
