Re: Anyone changed a pet EU passport for a Swiss one?

Hi all,

Need some advice on this one. Our dog has a UK passport and the French embassy released information on what will be required for a dog to travel to France with a UK passport which is some travel document that you have to get every single time. My family live in France so this is going to be a pain in the behind.
I asked my vet to change the passport and they said the cantonal authorities "assured them there would be no issue with travel therefore it is not necessary" I asked them for the details of these authorities as there will be an issue so i will just contact them myself.
The "Service de la sécurité alimentaire et des affaires vétérinaires SAAV" informed me that all pets keep their original passports so as not to "mislead as to their origin".

Im stumped, other people have changed pet passports with no problems, so I dont get why theyre acting as though Im asking naturalisation and voting rights for my dog!
This is for canton fribourg - anyone have any advice/know anyone in the SAAV that I can bribe?

Cheers

Try a different vet.

We had a problem with our pet passport when going to the UK and the French vet issued him a French passport no problem (and then Swiss vet issued another passport when we got home).

You might have to re-do the rabies vaccine and have it recorded in Swiss passport for it to be accepted though..... and you should still take the UK one along with previous history in it.

Worst case..... go to a new vet and tell them you "lost" his passport and start again.

Edit: Also UK EU pet passport is no longer a valid document - so not sure how he can "keep it".

Re: Anyone changed a pet EU passport for a Swiss one?

British Pet passport no longer valid- perhaps you will be able to change it, but it would have been so much better to do so before end of Dec. It makes sense that a British one cannot now be excahnged. Our dog has a Danish passport, and we have been told we can change it for a Swiss one if we wish.

Mind you, we go back and forth to France with our dog all the time, and we have never ever been asked for her passport.

Re: Anyone changed a pet EU passport for a Swiss one?

My daughter had a UK pet passport for her dog and because they were coming back to the UK for Christmas from Geneva they went to the vet and obtained a Swiss one. In the end because of our circumstances they did not come.

The vet said it was very important that they had their old UK pet passport as the initial rabies vaccine was in the Uk one and the booster was in the CH one.

It was very easy for them to get it - they scanned the microchip etc and they picked it up the following day.

I'm in the same place.. my vet said that I can't "change" a passport as long as they have a passport...

I may need to "lose" his passport

Have you explained to your vet... that he doesn’t have a passport, because the U.K. passports are no longer valid documents anywhere!?

Write them an email. Explain that the UK-EU pet passport is no longer accepted anywhere in Europe as it's not valid. And if they won't issue you a Swiss passport they'll have to give your dog a health cert every time you travel. Maybe send this link or similar https://www.rvc.ac.uk/small-animal-v.../pet-passports (it spells it out in red).

Yups - explained it...

Response I got:

Quote:

Mrs. xxx from Vetamt told me the Information we have do not suffice to write a new passport for xxx.
Please send a photocopy of the passport and your Information to Vetamt Aargau: info@ag.ch
Will do that, with a copy, in the next hour or so...

Re: Anyone changed a pet EU passport for a Swiss one?

Update: I replied to the SAAV mostly to express my annoyance and relay the points of the passport no longer being valid etc etc, this morning I received this response:

"Dans le cas présent, étant donné que vous résidez en Suisse et que le chien est bien enregistré auprès de la base de données AMICUS, il est possible d’établir un passeport suisse. L’animal aura dès lors deux passeports (le passeport suisse ne remplace pas le passeport britannique).

Cette information peut être présentée au cabinet vétérinaire, si nécessaire.

En espérant avoir répondu à vos attentes tout en restant à disposition si besoin, je vous présente mes salutations les meilleures."

So now they accept that he needs a Swiss passport. Why did we have to go around in circles just to get to this simple resolution?

Thanks for all the advice everyone

No they don't.

Quote:
"In this case, since you reside in Switzerland and the dog is registered with the AMICUS database, a Swiss passport can be issued. The animal will then have two passports (the Swiss passport does not replace the British passport).

This information can be presented to the veterinary office, if necessary.

Hoping to have met your expectations while remaining at your disposal if needed, I present you my best greetings".

Also the EU information regarding validity of an UK pet passport is not conclusive.
In https://ec.europa.eu/info/sites/info...lling_en_6.pdf as found at https://ec.europa.eu/food/animals/pet-movement_en
Quote:
The "EU pet passport"
issued before the withdrawal date to a pet
owner resident in the United Kingdom will from that date no longer
be a valid document for travelling with pets from the United
Kingdom to any of the EU-27 Member States as of the withdrawal
date.
It does not say anything about UK pet passports. What it says is that ANY EU pet passport (also French and German ones) of a pet and owner residing in the UK is void. In conclusion it would mean that an UK pet passport of a pet and owner residing in the EU or Switzerland is still valid.

If some one has other information, please provide a link to the official, relevant page at europa.eu

All the information refers to U.K. pet passports coming from and residing in U.K.
there is no specific info for a mix of U.K. passport EU resident. But I can almost guarantee you’ll have problems travelling with a British issued pet passport. U.K. residents with EU pet passports still ok.... suggests to me passport matters not residence.

“A current EU pet passport issued in GB will NOT be valid for travel to the EU or NI from 1st January 2021.”

As all info is written as if all travel goes to or from U.K. ..... I assume this also means within EU & NI too.

which is why you could exchange it until the end of December- but not so easy or perhaps impossible now- as it is invalid.

I got a Swiss Passport!!

My dog had a UK passport, which became invalid with Brexit...

After multiple emails with Vetamt and my vet, the conclusion was that they couldn't just reissue a Swiss passport. There is a thread on here, but I can't find it.

What was doable was to "lose" the (invalid) UK passport, get a new rabies vaccine, and then a new (Swiss) passport.

A week later, I have a bright red passport!

Was he due for a new rabies vaccine anyways?
