Rules on importing/rehoming animals

No.

She is not allowed to post an ad to rehome a dog here.

Under the Swiss Animal Welfare Law, no anonymous ads selling dogs or putting dogs up for adoption may be published. Sellers or adoption promoters must publish their full name, first and last, as well as their address and the country of origin of the dog.

This was brought in to combat dog dealing - and especially dealing/smuggling/illegal import involving dogs from countries outside Switzerland.

The platform or media publishing the advertisement is held responsible for compliance with this law. That, in this case, would be EF.

And as it is not allowed to post real names, addresses, contact details per EF policy, it was decided that no dog ads would be allowed after this law came into force.

So please, do not ask for more information about these dogs. The poster may not try to rehome them via a public EF post.

The reason I responded rather than ask a mod to delete was that the post was IMO sailing just a millimetre clear of the line, her question was more 'How do I go about it' rather than an out-and-out ad. I felt responding was the better course as it was clear that the poster does not understand Swiss law, either on imports or advertising, and has very little understanding of rescue. I had hoped to point the poster in the best direction to responsibly and ethically help these dogs, and to educate others as to why this is neither a good idea to import strays as a private person - nor is EF the vehicle to pursue this..

Make no mistake; the BLV clearly and unequivocally discourages people from bringing 'souvenirs' home from their travels. They call it 'falsche Mitleid' - and correctly point out that in doing so you are creating more problems than helping. If one is to do the best to help homeless critters, one has to follow Swiss law. Do it right.

But given the direction this is likely to go, it is probably best that this thread is deleted.

ETA:

The law is SR 455.1 (TSchV) Art 76a:

https://www.admin.ch/opc/de/classifi...ndex.html#a76a

1 Wer Hunde öffentlich anbietet, muss folgende Informationen schriftlich angeben:

a.
Vorname, Name und Adresse der Anbieterin oder des Anbieters;
b.
Herkunftsland des Hundes;
c.
Zuchtland.
2 Die Betreiberinnen und Betreiber der Internetplattformen und die Verlegerinnen und Verleger der Zeitschriften sorgen für die Vollständigkeit der Angaben.

Re: Rules on importing/rehoming animals

Meloncollie, do you know the rules if I want to bring a puppy or older dog over from the UK? Do I just need to get them a passport and then drive over? Or are there more hoops to jump through?

It's something I may want to do in the future, when my dog (from Swiss breeder) is a little older. Just interested to know how hard it would be. I went to the UK with my dog earlier this year, I assume once we were there there would be nothing to stop us remaining there with him.... but in Switzerland who knows

Re: Rules on importing/rehoming animals

As long as you are already the pet's owner, or are definitively importing a new dog, that is, you will be the owner and the dog will live happily every after with you, the process is quite straight forward.

Well, straightforward once the Brexit mess is... less messy. There is currently some confusion as to what a hard Brexit would do to agreements on the movement of animals. The BLV has added Brexit info here:

https://www.blv.admin.ch/blv/en/home...frettchen.html

Stay tuned for more info as we see what happens 31 October...

In any event, here is the BLV's interactive tool to guide you through importing a pet animal:

Generally it would be wise to expect the UK to be treated as a third country. So as long as the UK retains rabies free status, it really just means paperwork, dotting Is and crossing Ts.

When the time comes to consider traveling to and from the UK, revisit the BLV pages for updates.
