Highly Recommended: Tom's Hundewelt (DE)

A Muttley Crew crisis just before my (obligatory) Christmas trip to the US left me scrambling to find alternative care suitable for Robin Goodfellow.

Robin is a difficult dog. Heís my Waterloo dog, 6.5 kg of canine crazy, he may well turn out to be the critter who finally breaks me. Few kennels, Pensions, or individual sitters are willing, or more importantly able, to care for dogs who have Ďissuesí and boy does Robin have issues.

Thanks to help from our vet, an outstanding place was willing to take Robin in: Tomís Hundewelt in Riegel, Germany (near Freiburg). About an hour north of Basel.

Robin had a single room, quite spacious, that opened onto his own terrace and grass lawn. He could go in and out as he pleased, safely. (You can book multiple dogs from one family into a room if you wish, or if your dog is sociable with others you can opt for a double.)

The Hundehotel is spotlessly clean. I was very impressed with the infrastructure.

Relaxing music was piped into the rooms, the rooms seemed well sound-proofed.

Walks several times per day. If you arrange ahead of time it's possible to book training or behavioral sessions with the owner as an extra.

The staff are professionals; they spent time discussing Robinís behavior, how to handle him, his needs, how to keep him (and me!) happy. They asked all the right questions - it was such a relief to talk to people who understand dogs like Robin.

The staff will give medication, are happy to follow individual diets.

The Hundehotel is staffed 'round the clock.

I got daily updates, pictures included - the staff were responsive to all my questions and concerns.

Prices are quite reasonable.

As readers of my posts might know, I have always opted for in-home sitting for my dogs, I'd not even considered kennels before. But with concerns over Hooligan's health I felt that Robinís behavior required more than my two sitters should be asked to handle. Iíll admit to a bit of trepidation and a lot of guilt, but honestly - this was the best option for Robin. He was happy at Tom's, and I was so relived to have a safe place for him.

I will be booking Robin into Tom's again, no doubt. Highly recommended.

Oh, meloncollie, that is wonderful news! Thank you for letting us know. That must be such a relief, for someone finally to listen to what you're saying, when you know that you know that you know. Excellent!
