Arrest made in poisoned bait case

Finally, someone who laid poisoned bait has actually been arrested:

https://www.20min.ch/schweiz/zuerich...tappt-18879954

Summary: A witness saw a woman laying out bait; the police were informed, and on investigating found additional prepared bait at the woman's home.

This happened in Dielsdorf ZH. How many packets of rat poison wrapped in ham were laid out, and where, is not known so owners are cautioned to be watchful when out and about. Always have your dog in sight, and do not let your dog eat anything on the ground.

A packet of this bait was found by a cat; fortunately the cat brought the bait home rather than eating it in situ. Cat owners should also be aware, and as always - call the vet if your pet shows any symptoms.

Re: Arrest made in poisoned bait case

I so hope the fine/punishment will be important enough to serve as real deterrent. Thank goodness she was reported, and for once the matter taken seriously.

As a volunteer for the Badger Trust and a wildlife hospital in UK, I have dealt with so many cases where foxes and badgers were found slowly dying- over a period of days and even weeks- as internal organs slowly liquefy - as the dose taken is not enough to kill quickly. Key signs being dark blood congealed near all orifices, anus, but also eyes, nose. All had to be pts humanely.

I am pretty sure the perp will be referred for psychiatric reports and given a lenient sentence (jours amende avec sursis).

Rather make her eat her bait...

We lost a cat some years ago to presumed poisoned bait. The trouble is that by the time you notice symptoms, most likely bleeding from the mouth and nose, it's likely to be too late.

The local green police (this was in France, BTW) reckoned the bait would have been set for foxes or similar; not sure that's likely (and is no justification anyway) in this particular case. Hang the bastards, I say.

It's frightening to know that anyone could be evil enough to do something like that. I really don't understand humans sometimes.

I fear that you are probably right.

According to a follow up article in the 20Min, the woman is in 'psychiatrischer Obhut'.

I do wish our animal protection laws had real teeth.

Re: Arrest made in poisoned bait case

What gets me is the mailce in the effort involved in making up the packages of bait.
Although I would say, I don't think Swiss psychiatric detention is likely to be milk and honey
