Update COVID-19: Dog Training

Dear Dog Owners,

Here is the news for Dog Training, starting May 11, 2020:

1) Classes regarding mandatory courses/socialization have no limitations in group sizes, if running on the company’s/club’s property. However, the dog trainer needs to offer 50 m2 space per participant.
2) If offering mandatory classes in public, there is a size limitation of 4 participants + 1 trainer.
3) Every other dog training e.g. agility, obedience, etc. may be offered in small groups; 4 participants + 1 trainer, whether in public or on the company’s/club’s property.

Stay home, stay healthy, stay positive, stay active.

Re: Update COVID-19: Dog Training

Yep, I just got word that our Familienhund and various sports classes are limited to 4 participants per class.

Unfortunately that means that many of us will not be able to resume training for some time.

(Despite intense work at home over these last weeks, I fear isolation has led to a step backwards in Robin Goodfellow's ability to handle the larger world. I hope we can get back to something approaching our old training schedule soon-ish)

Re: Update COVID-19: Dog Training

We were able to get back to the Hundeschule after all! Gosh it felt sooo good.

The training ground is now divided into four squares, each person/dog team works within one square in order to maintain safe distance. We bring all our own toys, training aids, waterbowls, etc. and may not share. Disinfectant on entering and leaving. Sensible precautions, really, and not difficult to follow.

One thing I did notice, however:

I need to do more training with my dogs while wearing a mask. I've been wearing masks while on our walks so the dogs are used them, but I haven't worn one while doing our training exercises in my garden.

I had underestimated how much my dogs rely on my facial cues to accentuate voice and hand signals - especially my deaf old girl. It became clear as we were doing new exercises that communication while wearing a mask also needs to be trained. Sure, I should have anticipated this, same as training gloved vs ungloved hand signals. I'll just blame my COVID brain.

So we have some homework to do....

Re: Update COVID-19: Dog Training

Just got word from our trainer that dog schools will have to stop regular training until at least 22 January. This applies to both inside and outside training classes. (Exceptions may be possible for behavioral training, canton dependent.)

This is a federal ruling, the cantons are free to implement more stringent measures.

When we can resume regular dog training classes will be decided in January, depending on the COVID numbers.

So keep an eye on the BLV, your cantonal Veterinäramt, and keep in touch with your trainers.

See the FAQ under Veterinärbereich 22.12.2020 (it downloads in a pdf):
