Finding an apartment with a dog and two cats

Hello!

I plan on moving to Zurich later this year, and I'm a bit worried of finding an apartment to live.

We will have 2 cats and a very small (~6kg) dog. I know that this will severely reduce our options, but I want to know, are there still options to find a place to rent with 3 pets?

My wife will work from home so the animals won't be alone.

Our budget is between 3500 to 4000, and we don't care about living in the city itself, anywhere around 30 minutes from the central station would be fine, so we are pretty flexible. We care most about being near nature really.

Has anyone has any experience with these many pets?

Thanks!

With a budget of 4K, and that your dog is small, you shouldn't have the kind of problems you might have read about. Finding accommodation with cats and very small dogs is generally a lot easier than when one has a herd of larger mutts.

Take a look at Homegate, put in your max budget - you will see there are a fair number of properties available.

For instance, if you put in max 4K and pets allowed as a filter, currently there are 46 houses - not flats - that are possibilities. Including this dog owner's dream :

Looks like a good number of flats as well - but were it me, as a dog owner I'd always go for a house over a flat. Why put yourself through the potential for misery with pet hating neighbours and shared space when with your budget (and a dash of realism) you could likely find a house?

Broadly speaking, one tends to find more acceptance of pets at the higher end of the rental spectrum, if only because there is less competition for a more expensive property.

Are you restricted to Kt ZH? Could you also expand your search to neighbouring cantons?

Another way to up your chances would be to hire a relocation agent to help with the search. But if you do so, make sure you hire a 'dog and cat friendly' agent, one who truly understands how important your pets are to you. Not all agents understand what a pet owner is up against, nor what our pets mean to us.

Good luck with the search, with the move, and with settling your furry friends into their Swiss adventure.

Your options will be more limited, but within your price point, you should be fine. Cats are much more accepted here than dogs. As long as your dog doesn't have a barking problem, all will be well.

You will find much more options outside the city center. Uetliberg or the Zurichberg areas would be a nice places to look if you like nature. Good luck!

Echo everything that has been shared.
House is better than apartments with pets. Or if not possible, ground floor apartments are betters.
Pet friendly apartments and houses are available. I have seen folks differentiate between dog sizes (big/small breeds). With a good housing insurance, issues are typically resolved.
I would look outside the city centre for more options. People tend to be more open/flexible with suburbs and your pets may have more space to run and play.
All the best.

Re: Finding an apartment with a dog and two cats

You can of course set the pets allowed filter on Homegate, but don't necessarily restrict yourself to that. Many apartments allow pets even if it's not explicitly stated in the ad. Always ask about pets on your first contact (i.e. before you can fall in love with a place) and you may well be in luck.
