Cockapoo, breeders?

Anyone know of any Cockapoo breeders in Switzerland? Struggling to find any. Thanks.

Re: Cockapoo, breeders?

As you probably already know, a 'cockapoo' isn't a breed, but rather a mix of a cocker spaniel and a poodle. As a mix, anyone breeding these dogs will not be part of any official breeding club, nor will breeding practices be regulated. Most definitely caveat emptor.

Now - I am not a breed snob, far from it. Any and all dogs - be they mixes or recognized breeds or little bitsas - all are lovely to me. As you might know from my many meandering posts, though, ethical breeding, proper puppy rearing practices, and informed ownership are very important to me, if we are ever to overcome all the problems currently plaguing Dogdom.

I bring this up, though, because there are bad actors out there who will try to sell you a 'pedigreed' cockapoo or claim the dog has papers. Beware of anyone claiming to have cockapoos with 'papers', because it is not a recognized breed. First sign of a scam.

If you find someone who is breeding this mix, ask some sharp questions about health and temperament - and insist on seeing the breeder's set-up. You'd need to go to both the cocker spaniel club and the poodle club's websites to get the breed standards, and ensure that the sire and dam have all the relevant health checks for their respective breeds.

One other thing that is starting to crop up in 'poo' and 'oodle' mixes:

Rather than crossing with a poodle, the dog is increasingly crossed with a Puli or Pumi, two EE working breeds, and the resulting pups are passed off as having a poodle parent.

The Puli is often used as a livestock guardian despite it's small size, and the Pumi is a driving dog, which is generally more 'worky' than a typical herding breed. These two breeds have curly/wavy hair - the Puli is actually corded - giving the apprearance of what one might expect with an 'oodle' or 'poo' cross. These dogs' characters and instincts are quite different from a poodle, meaning the pups could be quite a surprise.

So if you are looking for this mix of breeds, just be aware of the Dark Side to the 'designer dog' market, and eyes wide.

---

I'll put in another 2P:

Why not go for the original, a poodle?

When Puddle the Poodle came into my life unexpectedly I'll admit the breed was one I had never considered. "Topiary dog, handbag dog", and all those stereotypes. Boy was I ever wrong!

Puddle was a fantastic little dog - sporty as heck (even as an old man he could leave the collies in the dust), brilliant, rock-steady character, a joy at the Hundeschule. I am now completely smitten. If the winds of fate ever send another poodle my way, I'll count myself blessed. Truly great dogs. And they come in all sizes.

I see what you’re saying... but for example I came across a breeder in the U.K. who is a registered breeder off the cocker spaniel and Labrador.... and also breeds their poodle crosses.
