Thank doG for dogs...

Just because we could all use a bit of good news these days:

https://www.20min.ch/story/rollator-...r-871001060345

Police in GR received a report that a Rollator was found along a trail in Churwalden - but it's owner, a lady with Parkinsons, was no where to be found.

The police instigated a search mission with the help of Yuna, a four year old Labrador. Yuna found the lady, who was lightly injured, 90 minutes later, down an almost impassible ravine.

This was Yuna's first search and rescue mission - she had passed the Swiss search dog test just last week.

So I think we can answer the age-old question 'Who's a good dog?' Clearly Yuna is.

Re: Thank doG for dogs...

And another 'Good dog!' story, from the NYT:

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/23/w...ronavirus.html

Travelers arriving at Helsinki’s airport are being offered a voluntary coronavirus test that takes 10 seconds with no uncomfortable nasal swab needed. And the test is done by a dog.

This is a pilot program, a partnership between the Helsinki airport and Wise Nose, a Finnish organization that trains dogs for scent detection. Samples of sweat are collected from wiping one's neck on a tissue (again, voluntarily), the dogs are presented with that sample and other control samples. If the dog identifies the sample as positive, the person is then offered a free standard COVID test.

A study in Germany found that with only a week of training their scent dogs could identify samples infected with the COVID virus from sample uninfected with a 94% accuracy rate.

Be sure to watch the video of one of the dogs at work.

Scent dogs can do amazing things, from finding lost people as in the opening post, to detecting several medical conditions such ascertain cancers, diabetes, Parkinsons, malaria, some can even detect chemical changes that might warn an epileptic owner of an impending seizure. And of course scent dogs are commonly at work in airports scenting for explosives and contraband (including money!)

The NYT article might be behind a paywall. If so, here's a shorter summary article from Huffpost:
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/dogs-...b6189caefb1f45

Getting tested by a dog just might motivate me to fly again. So Kudos to the Finns and their very good dogs!

I might want to fly again too if there are dog testers.

You might get your chance!

From the 20minutes:

https://www.20min.ch/story/jetzt-kom...z-880066814710

Three COVID scent detection dogs will be trained in Switzerland, a cooperative effort between the Swiss army, UN security service, and the University Hospital Geneva (HUG).

The three dogs are already trained explosive and drug detection dogs, hence it is expected that their COVID scent detection training should not take long. According to a HUG spokesperson, COVID scent detection dogs abroad have shown a 90% effective rate.

It is unclear how the dogs would be deployed around Switzerland, that is a political decision, according to a spokesperson from the Swiss army.

Re: Thank doG for dogs...

Three dogs couldnít provide much coverage however they are deployed. I doubt they work an 8 hour day.

But itís a good start ...
