Appartment contract and hosting a cat.

Hi all!

So I recently moved to Zürich with my cat. I plan to find permanent residence in my own appartment asap, but for the time being I am staying with my mum. I was looking through her appartment contract and realised to my dismay, that cats are allowed to stay only after getting written permission from the landlord and insurance.

Although the obvious solution is to contact the renting company and ask for permission, there was a bit of a falling out regarding another matter recently and it feels like the situation is tense. Also, I am not sure if permission would be required since this is not a permanent situation but hopefully will only last for a month or so. Since I am new here, I have no sense of how strictly enforced these situations are.

He is a strictly indoor cat and I am doing my best to not bother the neighbors in the least. However, he does sometimes meow and the walls are paper thin. But I am blessed with super polite neighbors we have never had an issue with.

Does someone have any experience or advice with similar situations? And realistically, what would the consequences be?

Forgot to add that there is also a dog in the building that sometimes barks. I guess that's what gave me the impression that my cat would be ok too for a little while.

Where animals are allowed, it's pretty standard to have that clause. I rent out my UK house and pets are allowed, but the standard contract drawn up by the management agency has a similar clause. It's just to prevent tenants from having 10 dogs or 20 cats without the landlord being aware.

If your cat is an indoor cat, then you should have no problems.

The apartment we own in the UK is managed like a Swiss PPE- by the owners' assocation. The majority decided they did not want pets in the property and grounds. Nought we can do about it.

Re: Appartment contract and hosting a cat.

Thank you for your replies. The building already has animals so I guess it's not a straight up "no animals allowed' case. I read on the Mieterverband site that indoor cats are more and more considered Kleintiere so that gives me hope.

I think it depends on how long you stay there as to whether it gets complicated. If you're only staying a short time, I can't imagine someone complaining about the cat for a few weeks or even a month unless it's howling the walls down.
