Junghundekurs deadline

Good evening all,

Long time lurker, first time poster. Apologies if this has been addressed previously, but I didn't find anything using the search function.

I moved to Switzerland in June 2020, and registered my 10 month old dog at the same time. I received a letter detailing the requirement to attend the Junghundekurs by mid February 2021. I had planned to attend in August / September, but then ended up having to return home to look after elderly family members. Since then I've not had an uninterrupted 2 months in Switzerland, and have been back and forth. I was hoping to begin the course after Christmas when I will finally have an uninterrupted stint in Switzerland. My question is: provided I start the course before the deadline, will I be ok? Or are they very strict on the deadline, and if I haven't submitted the certificate by then will I be fined? I've emailed the official department in charge, and amicanis, but haven't had a reply from either.

Any advice would be appreciated. As it stands I could complete the course before the deadline provided I started next week, but it would mean changing my Christmas plans significantly. On the other hand I want to do things by the books if it's going to cause issues for me and my dog down the line.

Thanks in advance!

Kasper

Re: Junghundekurs deadline

Here's what the ZH Veterinäramt says in their Codex, Chapter 3:

https://codex-hund.ch/storage/downlo...on-Zuerich.pdf

Essentially, if you do not fulfill the Junghund requirements by the deadline, you will likely be required to do additional Erwachsene courses.

Don't wait for word from the Veterinäramt, go and sign up for the course asap. Your trainer can help you navigate which courses you need to take and by when.

(FYI, many Hundeschule take a holiday break Dec-Jan. Key thing will be to show good intention and get signed up, even if you can't start right away. Again, your trainer will know what you should do to get in compliance.)

Re: Junghundekurs deadline

That's a Zurich requirement, not a national one, right?

Yes, ZH only.

ZH requires three sets of classes for List 1 dogs, those with expected adult size over 45cm or 15kg. Welpenförderung, Junghunde, Erwachsene, to be taken at the appropriate age.

There is a proposal to extend training requirements to all dogs, but that is not yet in place. I don't know whether the new proposal would include the same courses, or something different. ZH dog owners should keep an eye on the Veterinäramt website for info.

Re: Junghundekurs deadline

I have two 1 year olds, both under 10kg at adult weight, I live in the Zuri Oberland, There is no requirement to put these dogs through compulsory training. The rules changed about 2 years ago, if your dog is over 7 years old and and/ or going to be under 10kg weight, they are not required by law to train them. However, I would recommend training..better for both dog and owners.

My last dog that died a year ago was over 7 years old and over 10kg when we came here and again, he wasn't required to be trained.

Re: Junghundekurs deadline

Just so dog owners in ZH understand what changes are being proposed:

https://www.zh.ch/de/umwelt-tiere/ti...tml#1013703459

Rough translation:

On February 10, 2019, almost 70 percent of Zurich voters voted in favor of compulsory dog courses. In the meantime, the Regierungsrat submitted a bill to the Kantonsrat for simplified and shortened training course, which will then apply to all dog breeds.

It is expected to be 2021 before the Regierungsrat can take the necessary steps to implement the new regulations.

---

So until that time, the old regs apply: Courses are only mandatory for List 1 dogs.

(ZH never had mandatory classes for small dogs as part of the cantonal regs. What changed a few years ago was the abolition of the federal SKN.)

Re: Junghundekurs deadline

Good evening all,

Thanks for your help and excellent advice. I actually signed up on the evening I made this post, and we have started essons. I decided I would just come back early from the Christmas break and that way I could get them all done on time. However, typical of my luck, my home country has now been added to the quarantine list so I will probably still miss two lessons in January as I'll be stuck inside anyway! Despite calling and explaining this, the kanton officials have refused to grant an extension to the date, so I am now discussing with my trainer to try and figure out how to do multiple lessons per week without breaking the bank.

It doesn't rain, it pours.....

Thanks again for your help though guys. Fingers crossed the qurantine list is updated before the new year.
