I recently moved to Winterthur and want to make sure I know where an emergency (hopefully 24 hours) vet is, in case I need it. I don't want to try to find one when it's an actual emergency.

As an alternative if there are none in Winterthur, one in Zurich may work as a fallback.

Normally (in my case anyway) you call your normal vet’s number and it tells you the number of who’s on call at that time. But check with your vet.

As IM says, speak to your usual vet about the practice's emergency protocol. Many vets have an on-call rota for after hours emergencies.

Additionally, the University of Zürich's Tierspital is the metro area's hospital, available for emergencies 24/7.

by the way, the Tierspital is also the place you might be referred to for specialist care. It's one of the premier veterinary institutes in Europe.

I am about a hour away from the Tierspital, so even when I suspect their expertise might be needed in an emergency, I go first to my own clinic in the neighborhood so that they can get my dog stabilized. Then if it is decided that a transfer to the Tierspital is needed, my clinic arranges that, and off we go.

Most Zürich metro area vets work with the Tierspital, cooperation is excellent.

Bravo Xaro - for planning in advance. That is the way to do it- same for a GP.

I live in Winti - There is an emergency vet number that you call, talk to the vet on call and they help you figure out what to do. The number is on your vet’s website or on the phone message. I half expect that I’d go to the tierspital in Zurich in an emergency after consultation. Lucky for us, all our emergencies have happen during regular hours.

Perhaps ennui could recommend a good vet?

That's my second question then, any recommendations of English speaking vets in Winti?

My regular vet is in Zürich but of course I would like to get one around here.

My vet is in Turbenthal, so about 30 min from wulflingen, where we live. There are likely practices closer, but I started to go there because the Tierheim we use also uses this vet. The vets speak English and we like them very much.
