Should I pay dogs import tax? Dog nanny help fly in! Help!

Hello!
I bought 2 puppies 4-5 months old from Europe.
The owner/ dog nanny will help me to fly in the puppies through Geneva airport.
Of course they have all the necessary documents like pet passports.

I’ve read like tons of informations in forum and official websites but still so confused and lost if I should pay dog import tax at the airport.

Because We are not the ones that flying with the puppies, and the owner which probably also the dog nanny, she is European. So when she passes through custom, she doesn’t need to pay tax as she is with European passport not Swiss passport. And the puppies are also with European pet passports which already registered with my husband’s name and my name.

What should I do? Help? Anyone knows? My french is not so good and I’ve tried to ask but there is no exact answer what should I do?

"Taxes
Animals purchased abroad and imported into Switzerland are duty-free but are subject to 7,7% VAT on the value of the goods. You can help speed up customs clearance by showing a receipt for the goods."

https://www.ezv.admin.ch/ezv/en/home...c-animals.html

I hope that you bought them from a reputable breeder & that they had their rabies shots.

Thank you for the info! But it’s still not clear where should I pay the tax.

Because it’s not me flying in with the dogs. Just the dog nanny/owner

Yupe, they have all the shots and vaccinations.

Nanny should go to the red channel not green. Declare the dogs. Pay tax when asked. The most important thing is to get the passport stamped.

They are imported into Switzerland, so where is the confusion? Companies that import goods into Switzerland also have to pay the tax and then charge you afterwards. No difference.

Thanks! I understand now! Go through red! Ok!

But do my nanny need the European or Swiss declaration form or something? We got the pet passport, microchipped, shots & vaccinations all done.

Have you done any basic research like googling "import dog switzerland requirements" https://www.google.com/search?q=impo...hrome&ie=UTF-8

First link has some info https://www.bringfido.com/travel/int...l/switzerland/

Also info here https://www.blv.admin.ch/blv/en/home...frettchen.html

Read through everything carefully and make a checklist.

Why would they need the European one? They're coming into Switzerland so need the Swiss form of course. And her passport makes no difference, why would it?

I'm not sure if this would fall under the commercial or private rules.

Yes you need to pay the VAT as mentioned in the above link. The "delivery person" passport has no bearing on this whatsoever. As a Swiss resident importing goods you need to pay tax on the goods you are importing.

Omg.. thank you so much everyone for helping.

Ok, so now I know that I have to pay, but as mentioned above, the “delivery person” pass through the red channel to declare. But as commercial or non commercial (private pets)?

And what kind of Swiss form does the “delivery-person” needs? (declaration form ? Importing permits?
Non-commercial? )

Where can I get it for her?

Thank you for the infos. Yupe. I’ve read through over and over again, but the info just saying either commercial or non commercial and I don’t know what should I do with “delivery-person” thing.

I’m panicking as I don’t want to go against the law. With all these covid things going on, so much more complicated.

Thanks Medea! But do you know where can I get the Swiss form for the dog nanny? If falls under commercial, *finger crossed* what should I do next? I’ve searched all over the Sites, just no sign of the forms.

I assume that, logically speaking, the person importing the animals would need to be in possession of and be able to show all of the necessary documentation (your ownership, reasons for import, vaccination evidence etc etc) and then if needed pay any immediate charges that are asked, which you would then pay back.

Isn't that what you would expect or do you have a different impression?

The "Forms" section of the site I linked has a list of all necessary forms, did you check that? https://www.blv.admin.ch/blv/en/home...frettchen.html

Please note!

The 7.7% VAT applies equally to the delivery cost! In our case that was the airfare for the breeder and her husband.

Hello Bowie, do you mind if I ask, you have a dog nanny to help you deliver the dog too?

So beside paying “import tax” for the dog, adding the 7.7% VAT of the airfare too?

Re: Should I pay dogs import tax? Dog nanny help fly in! Help!

Ours were two kittens brought by the breeders from Amsterdam. We paid for their tickets. I’d say it would be anything you pay for delivery. Having an invoice spelling out what you pay will help. In our case they ‘estimated’ the cost, which actually was pretty close.

I'm not sure if this would fall under the commercial or private rules.

OP; I hope you read the procedure for "commercial rules". This will most likely fall under "commercial" as you are "importing" a purchase you made outside of Switzerland. And yes, of course you need to pay import tax. You are only exempt of this if you had moved from overseas to Switzerland with a pet that was already yours before your move.

Re: Should I pay dogs import tax? Dog nanny help fly in! Help!

Maybe it'll be easier for you to understand if you consider that animals are considered an object/thing/item (Latin res) in Swiss law. So if we substitute "cute puppy" for "a piece of art" and then apply the logic of what costs are involved in getting your newly acquired piece of art from, say, Paris to Geneva, it might make more sense. When you pay tax on items imported, the tax is on all the services involved in getting the item here as well as on the value of the item itself.

As for your question about people using a dog nanny - it's honestly the first time I've heard of such a thing, sounds a bit posh to me.

I've always found BLV to be helpful the few times I've e-mailed them about something so maybe contact them and see what they have to say.
