English speaking Veterinary services in Geneva near Thonex needed

We have just moved here from the states and when importing our dog we were told we need to get her to a vet within a month and then get a 'medal' from our town. We live in Thonex. How does one find an English speaking vet? Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

Re: English speaking Veterinary services in Geneva near Thonex needed

Hi

The folowing veterinary surgery in your area has two vets that both speak English: Dr. Etienne Monnin and Dr. Jean-Claude Niestlé

Address is: rue de Chêne-Bougeries 31, 1224 Chêne-Bougeries
Phone number: 022 349 6333

I haven't lived in Thônex since I finished high-school and moved to Zürich and beyond but I have fond memories of growing up there. I was back there a couple of years ago and most of the fields I played in with my buddies are all built up. When we first moved there we lived next to a farm that had about 6 cows and a dung heap!! Really rural and hard to imagine now. One morning we woke up to find one of the cows chomping on my mother's flowers...quite a laugh and not something that is likely to happen now.

Enjoy yourselves in Geneva, it's a great city.

Dr Monnin is a very good vet, highly recommended. He operated on my somali cat recently and she's in tip-top shape now.

Otherwise, Dr Denise Laübli in the Clinique vétérinaire de Riantbosson also speaks english, but she's in Meyrin!

A little tip from me too:

Clinique vétérinaire des Tuileries
Kleintierpraxis
Dr. med. vet. Wolfgang Uebersax
42, Ch. des Tuileries
1293 Bellevue
Tel. +41 (0) 22 774 25 25

His English is excellent and they are treating all animals, a bit expensive perhaps: 150 SFR per consultation

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Dr. Omaboe. He has a wonderful, fully equipped clinic on the Geneva/Vaud border in Mies.

Here is the clinic information:

Cabinet Vétérinaire International
Route Suisse 9
1295 Mies
022 755 55 33

Hi English is perfect (he had training in the US) and the staff are professional and friendly. He also offers holistic services like acupuncture and homeopathy.

His website is in English and/or French: www.veterinaireonline.com

He has been taking care of my cat for the past 2 years and I trust him wholeheartedly and would never go elsewhere.

Very expensive - I speak from personal experience - and no better than others.

Re: English speaking Veterinary services in Geneva near Thonex needed

Even though this thread is old, I wanted to post a warning to anyone who came across the above post concerning Dr. Omaboe. Please do NOT take your pets to him! I took my two, healthy cats to him for routine check-ups and he told me that they were in terrible pain and needed emergency dental care - to the tune of over 1000 CHF. The whole thing seemed very suspicious, as I had been to my own (U.S.) vet just a few months beforehand who said they were fine. The cats also were not acting or eating any differently. I felt very much like Dr. Omaboe was trying to manipulate or bully me. Even if he had been honest, which I don't believe he was, those tactics would have made me want to find another vet.

In any case, I called my U.S. vet who strongly advised me to get a second opinion, which I did. I took the cats to a second vet here in Switzerland who assured me that the cats were not in any pain and just needed a routine dental cleaning, whenever.

I started looking into Omaboe and it seems that he has quite a reputation for unethical practices and exorbitant fees. In my opinion, he preys on expats/diplomats who don't really know their way around Switzerland. Talking to others in Geneva/Nyon, I have gathered several examples where he has advised unnecessary and expensive tests, charged several times the standard Swiss veterinarian's prices, refused to provide copies of the medical records concerning someone's pets, and charged outrageous fees for his "emergency" service. (There is an actual, cantonal emergency number, by the way, that Swiss vets take turns manning.) For example, he charged a friend of mine over 300 CHF for an after hours, five-minute PHONE consultation. He provided no warning either; he just sent them a bill after the fact.

For me personally, for one cat's dental cleaning, he quoted me a price of 500 CHF, plus 625 CHF for the bloodwork. My other vet here charged 120 CHF for the cleaning, and 100 CHF for the bloodwork. And that vet gave me a copy of the results without a second thought.

Please, please find yourself another vet!!!

Happy Cats, thank you so much for your post. Many years ago, I was alerted to the practices of the veterinary surgery in Mies by somebody who worked there. Apparently, it was quite customary to suggest expensive (often uneccessary) treatments for animals who were taken there.

As I have stated in a previous thread, very expensive, catering to the International Community, hence the inflated fees, and no better than any other vet in the area. I speak from eperience!

Re: English speaking Veterinary services in Geneva near Thonex needed

My vets are in St. Jean.

They both speak English. she not so much, but he is Australian.

Cabinet vétérinaire de St Jean
Pia Luka and Robert Campbell
28 rue de St Jean
1203 Geneva
022 340 27 27

They saved Jimmy's life a year ago.

Her husband also has the Vets in Vésenaz, he is equally good - he saved Jimmy's life a few years ago! Pia took over the St Jean vets when her husband moved to Vesenaz. I would think that their bills are similar - even though Mr works in the posh part of town.

I don't know about how much, but I do know that last year the bill for Jimbo was 1800,. for an operation for an exploded bladder plus all the rest and she docked 300 off because I paid cash. He was in a critical state. I was told afterwards, when he was better, that he had an 80-20 percent of dying... Now he's jumping around like a fat kitten!!

I find when the vet speaks English, or someone there, is good. Especially when your pet is very ill and you zone off speaking the local lingo. I was a babbling blah blah!!

SORRY, just noticed this is an old thread.

But they are still there and are great vets for anyone who needs the info.

Again, I would also like to strongly discourage anyone from going to this so-called VET. Overcharging is only the half of it;bullying, scare-mongering etc etc. Why this guy hasn't been shut down is beyond me.

Please please stay away.

Cheers

WARNING!!!!

Never call this emergency vet:
He comes up all over google when you search but another vet told me he is known to be dishonest.
He charges way to much for treatments and medication and writes it on a piece of paper in order for it not go officially through his books.

DO NOT go to this guy in Mies:Cabinet Veterinaire Dr Nortez Omaboe.022 755 55 33

Rather make sure you ask your own vet for their emergency number.
Or use the following: Garde Veterinaire La Cote : 0900 0750 11
