From my experience, those classes are not very helpful. What I know about dogs and their behaviour, I found on my own. Unless the owners want to do their research, I wouldn't count on classes helping improve the current situation.
The SKN classes just skim the surface - I would hope that owners go far beyond that, either with regular classes or via work on one's own.

Given that prior to 2005 'Hans Ueli Hundehalter' likely wouldn't have taken classes on his own initiative, that the concept of owner responsibility was largely foreign to him, that he was stuck in training methods now discredited - while the SKN is far from perfect and certainly far from what is needed at least the SKN classes are a start, at least dog owners are hearing the same message.

A good trainer makes the class interesting, fun, pads out the basics required by law.

But I agree - it's very superficial. But hopefully it will whet one's appetite for further involvement.

Re: Dog Bite

The compulsory courses, in my experience, are a means to observe the dog with other dogs and people, and to offer advice when there is bad behaviour.

The SKN people are the experts in dog behaviour, and if things get bad, it is these same people that will be testing the dog's behaviour: the dog's attitude for instance to children.
