dog shows in switzerland

Hi all pet lovers
I was just wondering if they have any dog shows hear in swiss i no its the wrong season for exeption shows but maybe some kc open shows?? I have my boyfriends basset to play with and it would be fun to experiment with a new breed as i have been brought up showing bedlingtons, parson russles and wippets . Also do they have dogy schools hear?? think it would do ozzy (dog name) a world of good to do some more socialising with other dogy friends

Many thanks in advance

Re: dog shows in switzerland

I can't advise on dog shows, 'cause that ain't my thang - but if you browse the SKG website you will find plenty of info:

http://www.hundeweb.org

Getting Ozzy involved in a dog training school or club would be a very good idea. (In fact, under the new Tierschutzgesetz anyone who acquires a dog after 1 Sept 2008 must attend classes in the first year of ownership.) I see 'Familienhund' classes as an activity, not just training, and my hooligan has been going regularly for 2 years now. It has done wonders for her socialization. (And mine )

You will find contact info for training schools on the SKG website under 'Erziehungskurs'.

Or get in touch with Certodog for a list of trainers in your area:

http://www.certodog.ch/

By the way, their list of Certodog member trainers approved (as of January 2009 - hopefully updated regularly) to offer the obligatory Sachkundenachweis under the new law is here:

http://www.certodog.ch/filemanager/1231927840.pdf

If you are interested in clicker training, you might contact these folk (in Lohn- Ammannsegg - maybe a bit too far away from you, but they might have further contacts you could try):

http://www.clicker.ch/

You should also ask your local vet for recommendations, as well as any dog walker you see out and about. Or, simply google 'Hunderziehungskurs' or 'Hundeschule' and your location - there are plenty of good independent trainers who have chosen not to join an umbrella organization.

The important thing in choosing a training school is to make sure the methods promoted are positive, reward based - and not based on the use of force, fear or pain. It's a good idea to visit any training class at least once without your dog, talk to the trainer and other participants, and see for yourself it it would be a good fit for you and your dog.

You might also consider a sport - as he is a basset, maybe Ozzy would enjoy tracking?

The hooligan does Agility and Team Training, my oldie does a little Mobility - but we only train for fun, I have no desire to compete. In the world of dog sports there are people who take things very seriously - and then there are people like me who are simply looking for a fun way to give our dogs some exercise, socialization, and a bit of 'brain training'. So - look around, visit a few clubs, see where you and Ozzy feel most comfortable.

Hope you and Ozzy find what you are looking for.

Re: dog shows in switzerland

The biggest dog (and other animal show) in Switzerland takes place in Lausanne in the fall (17-18.10.2009) at the Beaulieu Exhibition centre.

It is called "Animalia"

Re: dog shows in switzerland

There is an International dog show in Luzern every year but they haven't posted the dates for 2009 yet. If you google Internationale Hundeausstellung Luzern you will arrive at the info. once the dates are available.

Re: dog shows in switzerland

The main all breed shows are St. Gallen (May), Fribourg (Feb) and Lausanne (Oct). The show in Bulle (June) is also an all breed show but much smaller. Lucern is a large all breed show but it's only every other year. Since it was in 2008, it won't be this year but in 2010. Then there are the smaller specialty shows that you can check the link above for.

The Fribourg show takes place 21st and 22nd Feb. at the Forum Fribourg, it is for all breeds with CAC and CACIB whatever that means, I guess if you are into showing it will mean something! Homepage is www.chiens-expo.ch If you are planning to enter - good luck!

Re: dog shows in switzerland

There is a doggy event (not show more an expo) in Winterthur this weekend starting today. I guess there are loads of companies offering doggy goods and also clubs exhibiting. My other half has gone today with the puppy (ok 41 kg now!) and I'll report back tonight. Sorry I don't have a link but it won't be difficult to find.

Re: dog shows in switzerland

There are few, not so many. But of course the possibility to go around to Germany or France, a lot more shows there.

Here is the swiss show-calender: http://www.skg.ch/hundewebd/index.html

You can also always call or email SKG, they are very helpful and speak English too.

I'm going to my first Swiss show 21.- 22. feb

Re: dog shows in switzerland

Missed this one :-)

As said above - the next big international show is Lausanne. Bulle is a smaller national show but has been called off due to financial problems.

Per year there are 3 double CACIBs (international), Fribourg in February, St. Gallen in May and Lausanne in October. Bulle is the only national all-breed show. The breed clubs sometimes organize additional specialties.

Luzern is not every other year, but every 5. It was as said in 2008 the last time.

Germany, France, Italy usually have enough shows between them to be away every weekend but mostly during the season.

If you have any questions just shoot - spend most of my weekends at one show or another and know the southern European calender. I show Poodles and Swedish Vallhunds, and yup - I do breed SKG

Re: dog shows in switzerland

Did you go bigblue?

I have not been active at the shows for the last two years, but I went to the one in Aarau with my Teckla and she became Best of Breed and got her 3rd CAC!
Now she only needs one more CAC and she will become a Swiss Champion.
Will she be the first imported EF dog to become Swiss Champion?? Stay tuned...

No, unfortunately I didn't get to go, but congratulations on your win. My bosses were there (which is how I knew about it), and one dog they took also won best of breed.

Re: dog shows in switzerland

I came to find a post to give some rep to Begga. My little Chihuahua who passed away in April was a Swiss, Lux & International champion & Swiss Jr Champion as a pup. It would have been fun to have hung out at the shows together.

I hope my little Lucy & Begga can take care of each other in heaven.

I do not know the details so can not comment, I believe Begga's mother is "on her way" (Sat / Sun, something like that), the police maybe leave it to her to sort out what happens to Teckla. Begga had a roommate who was accustomed to spending time with Teckla when Begga was not at home (unless of course both were out, then Tekli visited with one of the others of us) and perhaps Teckla will be with him.

One way or another, Teckla will be loved. <3
