Avian Vet recommendations?

My wife and I are moving to Lugano in August. Does anyone have a line on a list of avian vets? It may be that in a town the size of Lugano there are no avian/exotic vets so any good recs that aren't too far would be good.

See the following link, maybe you'll find what you're looking for there:

Re: Avian Vet recommendations?

Thanks for that. Fortunately I have enough French to wade through some of the links to vets. :-) There seems to be at least one vet in Lugano that handles birds.

What kind of bird do you have? Are you aware of the laws here concerning the keeping of large birds? (Kantonal approval, etc)

Re: Avian Vet recommendations?

We have two run-of-the-mlll male Solomon Island eclectuses. I'd hardly call them large, except in noise. ;-) In getting some info from the FVO, they mentioned possibly needing a 'detention certificate' but that I needed to check at with the Kanton. I'm not quite sure what that is but I sent an email today to one of the vets in Ticino that I believe is responsible. They also are not on the CITES list so I don't have to worry about that.

Re: Avian Vet recommendations?

You might be able to get the information you need concerning importing your birds by asking your nearest Swiss consulate. When I first came to Switzerland I brought my cat with me, a few months before departing I asked at the Swiss consulate in San Francisco exactly what I needed to do, they were very helpful and supplied me with all the information I needed to bring the cat to Zurich.

See the following link for all locations in the USA.

Re: Avian Vet recommendations?

This is an old thread but I don't want to start a new one on the same topic.

We need to visit an avian vet. Our dog's vet recommended an avian vet in Italy, in Milan. We have the Cites certificate and everything we need for Switzerland but trying to sort out the paperwork to enter Italy from here is impossible.

It seems the only veterinarian in Ticino with experience with birds, though she is not an avian vet, is Dr. Nägeli. Has anyone ever visited her clinic? https://naegelivet.ch/

My preferred option, in Zug, involves a lot of driving. The train is not faster and requires 3 changes and our parrot has never been on the train. Does anyone have any experience with the avian vet in Hünenberg? Dr. Morena Graf-Wernick is at the Ennetsee Klinik.

According to the website it is possible to have a video consultation so we might do that initially.

Looking for any feedback. I know the Ennetseeklinik has been highly recommended numerous times on the forum, but usually by dog and cat owners.

No experience with Dr Graf-Wernick, as I only have dogs - but just wanted to say that the care my crew have received at Hünenberg has always been very good.

If you can do a video appointment to get started that would seem like an excellent first step. You'd get a sense of the avian vet's skill, manner, etc. before you make the long trek from TI to ZG.

Fingers crossed for your girl, I know how worrying this must be.

All the best to you and your feathered and furry family members.

Re: Avian Vet recommendations?

I have some good news. The avian vet in Milan replied to my email. He sees his Swiss patients in Ticino at Dr. Naegeli's veterinary clinic. It will be a couple of weeks wait, but as it is not urgent, this will be okay.

Here is the link with information about the avian veterinarian in Milan. He has been highly recommended.

So this is the best solution- 45 minutes driving (more if traffic is bad) to see a top specialist.
