Random explosions today - resulting in a lapful of quivering jellyfish Heffalump - reminded me that it might be a looooooooooooong weekend coming up. | | | | | Awwww. Poor Heffalump. Between the T-storms and the fireworks, our cellar is getting a lot of use. I saw that our local coop will sell fireworks starting thursday. | This user would like to thank for this useful post:

Cannot these damned fireworks and firecrackers stop during reasonable daily hours and only start later at night. This noise is not only annoying but also it makes no sense to waste them during the day whereas palette of colors is better visible at night.

Fireworks started on Friday night, have been going off randomly all weekend.
I do wish there were some way to call a 10 minute local moratorium late afternoon so that stressed-out pets could piddle. Just a 10 minute break would make all the difference to how our pets get through the night.
Hooligan and the Belltie are OK, they made it out between the explosions. But everytime Heffalump goes out the neighbor fires another rocket into our garden, sending H. running for cover. Heffalump has been too stressed to piddle since this morning and now won't even go out. So thumbs pressed that once the howitzers start firing his poor stressed (and full!) bladder can cope.
Happy 1 August, one and all.

Our cat has decided that his safe place in case of thunder or fireworks was under our bed but he has to pass over our heads to get there because there is no other way out (my husband has his bed slightly raised and he passes there).
So you have this cat passing and clawing his way by our faces at 2 am. If it makes him safe...this cat also wakes us up every day at 4 am to go out so we are used to it.

Happy 1 August, one and all. | | | | | My husband just took out Lily for a quick walk. She's been ok today, but sitting under the dining room table a lot.
We live next to a big common area so we'll be in the cellar soon. Assholes.
Your neighbor is a total and complete ass, MC. Is he allowed to shoot crap into your garden? That seems so wrong.

We took two of our three to the kennels in Germany this morning, but we had fireworks in our neighbourhod last night.
Today, as yet, not one bang. If it stays that way I'll be royally pi**ed off!
Hana, our 15 year old is deaf and couldn't hear a firework if it went off right next to her. Blissful ignorance..... We have kept her with us.

He has been shooting rockets off his balcony all day long, any and everywhere.
(He's not the neighbor who burned the Belltie a couple years ago.)
I've been here long enough to know that anything goes on 1 August. Best thing to do is to keep one's head below the parapets. Quite literally, in this case.

Those poor pet owners with agitated dogs should unleash their beloved ones which would subsequently bite the firecracking culprits in their asses to understand how inconsiderate their pleasure of shooting the fireworks in quiet neighbouhoods it is. Otherwise, to those enjoying quiet August the 1st and the National Day - cheers. |

Ufffff I hate that. Two days in a row now. Night time starting early evening preventing our kids to sleep, our windows have to stay closed, the cat is stressed out and the dog doesn't react too often. I'm stressed out with all those bangs and noises!! | The following 2 users would like to thank Nil for this useful post:

| | Re: August 1 and all that noise
So here we are on 2 August:
This was one of the loudest years yet. Seems the revelers had got hold of some serious weapons grade fireworks.
Good news is that Hooligan did not have an epileptic seizure last night, thank doG! She was a pretty unhappy bunny, but thankfully was spared that. Thundershirt and TTouch seemed to help.
Bad news is that the Belltie is not as deaf as I had thought. Although, fireworks aside, that is actually good news.
Poor Heffalump remained too stressed to move all night, I finally got him outside at 5AM. Cue the Austin Powers 'reanimation' scene... Clearly I have my DS/CC work cut out for me.
Hope you and your pets all managed to get through the night safely.

So, we were fine till it started to get dark. I should have put the Thundershirt on Lily, but too late realized that. It go dark, noisy and then we sat in the cellar and she went to sleep. Then around midnight, it seemed quiet. Naaah.
Back to cellar, but then we discovered she would not go into the cellar with my husband. So i went back again. She just would not settle down. Finally she slept and i essentially got to bed around 4 since i could not sleep in the cellar.
I was so tired, i forgot about the thundershirt.
But she's safe, so that's fine.
Glad you're ok, mc. Hope everyone else is too.

Cookie, our 4mo pup, wasn't particularly bothered by the bangs, but when she saw that Brownie was terrified she thought she had to be as well
Both dogs spent the evening and night in our bathroom, in the dark (they seemed to prefer it, for some reason). I showered with 2 mutts sitting on the foot rug by the bathtub
Luckily they seem much better this Morning!

Our cat stayed inside most of the time from 7.30pm onwards. We were having a bbq with neighbours, so I kept checking on him. He spent most of the night under our bed and had dragged my OH's shoes under with him, so that he was corralled in a group of shoes and the spare mattress.
The fireworks were still going off at 2.20 here, and there were two huge bangs that sounded more like gas explosions at about 1.30. Same as the rest of you, my cat kept waking me during the night for reassurance.

OH and I got home from a trip quite late in the evening, but the show was still going on. I love the fact that the Swiss really celebrate this day.
We too opened a bottle of Prosecco and wished Switzerland a happy birthday.

My cats stared out of the window looking at the pretty lights. The bangs didn't seem to bother them much.

Given that it was perfect weather yesterday it was surprisingly quiet here, started sporadically at about 1400 and went till a bit past midnight.

Our cat is pretty nervous when it comes to strange loud noises and will jump if a motorbike goes past but he is remarkably calm when it comes to fireworks and they don't bother him in the slightest fortunately.
There did seem to be a lot more fireworks this year than in previous years ( last being very quiet due to the restrictions) but around here at least they are restricted to a couple of hours between around 10pm and midnight and only for the two days.

I had to retrieve my cat from under a chair last night to bring him to bed. He is usually there waiting for me but not yesterday. I put some music to hide the noise and he started purring and seemed happy to be next to me. I woke up during the night with something on my face, looked and it was his back paw while he was on his back completely asleep.
It made me feel less stressed for him. | The following 3 users would like to thank Nil for this useful post:

Spending from Saturday until yesterday in Berlin was definitely the right thing to do. The dogs were very happy. It'was the expensive way to go, but well worth it. I would do anything for my babies. <3 I must admit I enjoyed our trip too.
