how to take care of dog when YOU are sick

Hello!

Me and my partner are very sick at the moment (flu) and we can not leave the house much...we have fever and we are very tired. Our dog is quite passive as (i think) she senses that something is wrong. I take her out twice a day to do her business but i feel awful for her, not being able to walk her more...nobody can do it as nobody can come home to pick her up (they may get the flu as well).

how do you deal with such situations? OUr dog is sad as we barely throw the ball to her....we are hoping to be back in action by the weekend but in the meantime, what do you suggest we do??

thanks!

The dog will be fine and it won't hold a grudge.

Re: how to take care of dog when YOU are sick

Sorry to hear that you aren't feeling well, Delfinita. Whatever flu bug is going round right now is awful.

I wouldn't worry too much. Dogs are pretty adaptable critters.

If you are feeling up to it, low-key indoor training games or perhaps some clicker training are a good ways to keep your dog occupied. Mental exercise tires most dogs out far more quickly than physical exercise.

If you are not feeling up to that, a stuffed kong, interactive toys, activity boxes, a few good runs around the garden - your dog will be fine.

(When I'm sick, my crew get pressed into hot water bottle duty. Nothing so comforting as a cuddly warm canine.)

Although I admit I generally let the mutts take over my life, I do believe that a dog needs to learn to adapt changes in the family routine.

Hope you feel better soon.

You only need to pass the lead out of the door.

Re: how to take care of dog when YOU are sick

My dog likes to play "hide the beefy snack" in the house. In nutshell I cut up one of those soft dog chews into lots of little pieces and hide it in different places around the house while she is shut in the front (so she can't see me do it). She loves spending 10 minutes sniffing around the house for beefy snacks subsequently...

Sorry to hear you are sick. If I lived closer I'd help you out. I don't think your dog would give me the flu . But don't feel guilty, just focus on getting better. When I am sick, the dogs seem to sense it and they tend to want to cuddle up and make me feel better. Your dog may be sad because she knows you are sick.

It's much worse when you are sick and have to take care of your kids. Unfortunately when they are young they are not so understanding.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. If you really think your dog needs a walk, why not call your dog's veterinarian and see if one of the praxis assistants will take her, or if they know someone locally who might want to. I have done this before.

Re: how to take care of dog when YOU are sick

This might work..

Seriously tho, you just ask the neighbours. We walked the neighbours dog for about 3 weeks last winter - she was very sick with a flu. She is 70 and weighs about 40kg, so it hit her bad.

And if you can't, they really will get over it very quickly.

Re: how to take care of dog when YOU are sick

Don't worry, the flu will clear up in a week, two at the most. It won't harm the dog at all if you can't do the usual walks. It may put on a little bit of weight but you can run that off when you feel better. Don't panic
