Advice for importing a Staffordshire Bull Terrier?

Hello all,

This question doesn't relate to myself but to my brother and his fiance, they are relocating from the Uk to the German / Austrian border and have the option to live in either country. They have an elderly staffordshire bull terrier who wouldn't hurt a fly but have been told that they cannot bring him with them as his breed is a class I dangerous dog!! It will be heartbreaking for them and the dog if he has to be left behind Does anyone have any advice on how they can bring him with them, is it possible to have a vet asssess his temperament and issue him with some paper or other? I have previously moved to Greece with a Rhodesian Ridgeback, I had no problems with her pet passport and believe me, she was far more dangerous than this little old fella.

Thanks

Re: Advice for importing Staffie

From what I understand, one cannot import a Staffie to Germany:

http://www.zoll.de/english_version/f...ets/index.html

Exceptions are made for service dogs, re-imports of dogs originally from Germany, and tourists who are staying less than a month.

But do call the Zoll authorities for confirmation.

ETA:

On another forum, a poster mentioned that there may be some 'rethinking' going on over BSL in Germany... I don't have any further info, but please contact the Bull Terrier Clubs in Germany, and Veterinary Office inthe various Bundesländer for more to date information:

http://www.gb-f.de/

Perhaps someone with personal experience/better information can suggest alternatives?

Quickly googling, I think dog control is regulated at the province level in Austria. Here is some general information, perhaps you could write to the relevant office for specifics:

ETA:

Here is the Staffie club of Austria, do write them - I'm sure they will give you up to date info. I see that they are currently campaigning against BSL in NÖ...

Is living in Switzerland a possibility? Do be aware, though, that several cantons also have introduced BSL - notably ZH will ban the importations of Staffies in 2010, they are controlled in Basel as well. For a comprehensive overview of cantonal laws:

I certainly feel for your brother and his dog - BSL hurts so many innocent friendly family pets, and does nothing to further a safe society.

Were it me, I would search for someplace where my dogs were welcome, and commute long distance if necessary.

Hope your brother can find a solution for his doglet.

importing into Switzerland is one thing (assuming you could move quick enough to beat the ban), finding somewhere to live that will accept your Staffie if you are renting is another issue altogether. We were told quite flatly that the reason we wouldn't be considered for places was because of ours.

In the end we unfortunately had to rehome him in England, as I'd already moved and quit jobs etc. If we'd known just how difficult it would be, we wouldn't have relocated to Zurich.

Re: Advice for importing Staffie

Hi, thanks very much for the info and the advice...much appreciated. As an update, switzerland is not an option as the job is based near Munich. I should mention that if he does need to be re-homed in the UK then he has a lovely home to go to with another staffie that is his best friend, so it may be more traumatic for the owners than for the dog... it is just such a shame that because of irresponsible idiots these dogs have such a bad press...I know several Staffies and all are sweet gentle animals with lovely personalities...
Thanks again for your help
