| | Expressing a Dog's Anal Gland
Yes, ewww. I would like to learn how to do it; I've watched videos and have read about it but don't feel comfortable (at all) doing it the first time on my own. If anyone knows how to and would like to show me I would greatly appreciate it.
Please pm me. Thank you.

Seriously. Rubber gloves, lube Jelly, Peg (for your nose), one finger in 1-2 inches (for a medium sized dog), aim for the 3 and 9 oclock positions. Be firm. Try not to laugh or gag. | This user would like to thank Upthehatters2008 for this useful post:

We had to do this regularly with our Newf bitch and we got the vet to show us how. Not very nice for us or for the dog, but all of us got used to it in the long run

If you want to pass by Basel, I'll show you. I had to do it for a while to my dog years ago. Wasn't nice but he felt so much better!

What I was shown was a technique that does not involve sticking one's finger in, but gently squeezing from the outside. I use tissues to catch the fluid and I put a robi dog bag over my hand. When I am done I put the tissue in the bag and then in the robi dog. I always give the dogs a doggie treat afterwards. | The following 5 users would like to thank Mrs. Doolittle for this useful post:

When you have more than one dog, the trouble is after you have done what needs to be done to the first dog, the others know what is coming. Whether it is nail cutting, teeth cleaning, ear cleaning, for me I tend to do all the 3 dogs one after another. So treats are great, the dog knows they will be rewarded if they cooperate.

Expressing a dog's anal gland..?? euuwww.. I've had a half dozen dogs in my lifetime but never did I ever do anything like this to any of them nor have I ever heard anyone recommend that I do it to a dog. After Googling the subject and viewing a few videos I guess I've got something new to look forward to with my next dog.. |

Our dog is 15 now and it was never ever ever ever ever mentioned to us by a vet or anybody in any of those years that we should be doing this.
I didnt hear of it until I started working at the dog grooming salon and people would ask if we did glands
To which our boss generally answered "hell no (depending on how close she was with the dog's owner of course!), but your regular vet will usually do them for free if you talk to them about it next time you have an appointment".. is that not a possibility here??
That is my entire knowledge on that subject.
How often is this supposed to be done?

But at least you leave your dogs feeling less violated than others I guess

You might have a look at this site. It is primarily for Labrador owners, but I have seen this subject discussed several times and there might be some tips there. http://www.lab-retriever.net/

Do have the vet show you - and the next time it is needed, bring the dog to the vet, have him supervise while you do it.
For a few dogs with problem anal glands, expressing improperly can cause damage. I always go with better safe than sorry.
I routinely do a lot of 'eeeeewwwwww' stuff without batting an eyelid, but expressing anal glands is one thing I leave to the professionals. I know my limits.
If your dog needs expressing with some frequency, there may be more to it than simple impaction. In which case you'd need to see the vet.
Best of ...erm... luck with your endeavors. | The following 3 users would like to thank meloncollie for this useful post:

Now I see why it is called grooming. | The following 5 users would like to thank eyebeebe for this useful post:
