Re: Advice appreciated- Im allergic to my kittens

I wish your kittens all the best, and hope they get better soon.

BTW, if anyone saw the post I made a few minutes ago, please accept my apologies: it was meant to be a tongue-in-cheek, topical visual joke, but I hadn't read the thread properly and had missed the fact that the kittens were sick. It's gone now.

Sorry about that.

Re: Advice appreciated- Im allergic to my kittens

Thank you so much everybody!
They are such little fighters and just need to make it through the next 4 days. Marley went back to the woman we got him from on Sunday to get better, we assumed it was just the flu.
Monty got ill quickly yesterday and she is at the vets. we only found out about the disease with monty today. Hopefully we've caught it early enough. She's on a drip and antibiotics, but also separated from any other cats so we go in at least twice a day to keep company. Now we can also treat Marley for the same thing.

We got the kittens from a lady who is a veterinary nurse, she takes in cats from farms and private people and finds them a home. Both kittens got their shots the day we picked them up and in no way are we putting blame on her. These things happen, still you can never ask enough questions - try to get kittens after they have had their 2nd shots.

I will keep you updated.

@dougals breakfast, dont worry about it, it actually put a smile on my face, that nutty old bat!

Re: Advice appreciated- Im allergic to my kittens

How are the kittens doing? Hope they're doing well! They look so sweet.

If you have a lot of nasal symptoms, you should also ask your doctor for something like nasonex. It's a topical steroid, squirted into your nose once a day, and really a lot of itchy and runny nasal symptoms. My seasonal allergies are nearly gone from using it in the spring and fall. Since it's topical, it doesn't have the evil side effects of steroids that you take.

I also have a pet hair vacuum, it's an electrolux, and it has a hepa filter and a disposable bag. Does a great job when my pup starts to shed in the spring and it looks like tumbleweed around here.

Re: Advice appreciated- Im allergic to my kittens

You have a choice between symptom relief or cure. All the antihistamine and medication you can have are just symptom relief. Cure generally takes a longer time like desensilibisation against allergens (success rates still debatable in medical studies, depends on individual), or homeopathic (helped in my case although not for cats, although the treatment takes longer period) or hypnosis (works for some, although debatable).

Re: Advice appreciated- Im allergic to my kittens

Unfortunately we had to let Monty go this morning, it was incredibly sad.

I'm not sure how Marley is as the lady we got him from - and took him back to nurse - is ignoring me (I suspect he has the same sickness, however she has previously brushed this aside). I dont think I'm asking too much, I just want an update on his health.

This is a legitimate 'Katzenvermittlung'. Unfortunately my vet warned me this morning not to get cats from her again. Apparently this woman uses different vets for all of her cats and about 75% she sells end up sick. This shocks me, how can such an establishment be allowed?

Now, just on 1 week after picking up the kittens, we have 1 dead, 1 unsure and a HUGE vet bill. Needless to say I will be going against this with her.
I understand that kittens are living beings and the possibility of sickness is there. However, I believe she knowingly sold us sick kittens.

In the meantime, we are disinfecting our apartment from top to bottom, and hoping that Marley comes home.

If we ever get a new kitten in Montys place - (we are not sure we want to go through this type of thing again - though we also still have a duty to Marley) we will make sure to go a 'Vermittlung' recommended by a vet.

I'm a very diplomatic person, I'm sure she didn't want or anticipate the kittens would be ill. However what shows a persons character is how they react and treat people once such situations occur.

we will miss you Monty.

Re: Advice appreciated- Im allergic to my kittens

Heartbreaking story and I think you have every recourse to take this woman to issue.

She knows it, the vets know it and definitely, you know it.
You are in the perfect position to stop her from continuing her unscrupulous and exploitive cat trading.

I hope you have the energy to persue this matter, it happens all too often.

I'm presuming money was also exchanged, even if it wasn't, it still needs to be stopped, you can do this.

If you would like, I will happily support you if I can, just send me a private message.

This wasn't fair to you or the poor kits, very poor show on this womans behalf.

This is very sad.

But do do something against that horrible woman. Even if only making her pay the vet's bills.

Is the other kitten you gave back to her ok? You should get him out of her house asap.

Oh no I'm so sorry.
I'm stunned that nothing has been done about that woman even though the vet is fully aware of what she is doing
Good luck with taking her down!

Poor moggies. Hope the other little guy makes it.

Rather than comb a cat and use the hoover, you might try this.

(Note - the cat in the video is deaf. I know our cats freaked out at the sound of the hoover).

I'm so sorry about your kitten. How sad. Hope the other one gets better... Poor little things.

I don't understand the ethics of someone who knowingly sells sick pets... Doubly heartbreaking for the animal and the owner. Cruel.

Re: Advice appreciated- Im allergic to my kittens

I'm so sorry to hear about Monty; poor little one. Have you had any updates on Marley?

---

As for taking things further with the breeder - from the little I've read, (bearing in mind I'm not a lawyer, just a lay person with imperfect German) the law does seem to address such issues, but how your sales contract reads also seems to play a part. I'd suggest you contact Tier Im Recht; ask them for advice on the law, based on your exact situation - and be sure to include details of your sales contract and your veterinarian's reports.

To give you some idea of the laws surrounding the sale of animals, see:

http://www.tierimrecht.org/de/rechts...eren/index.php

Especially, see the articles pertaining to 'Tiermangel' and the bit about 'Garantie auf Tierkauf'.

---

All fingers crossed and thumbs pressed that Marley pulls through.

Re: Advice appreciated- Im allergic to my kittens

Hi Everyone,

First off I wanted to thank you all for your posts! It was a tough time and hopefully something we will never have to go through again.

Unfortunately Marley passed away shortly after Monty. Turns out Marley carried the sickness originally as it's present on the farm he came from.

The feline parvovirus has no shell and thus can live up to 1 year without a carrier. This meant that we had to disinfect our apartment. We received a spray solution from the vet which we used on furniture and carpets (after shampoo cleaning it). We threw out all cat toys, dishes, beds and blankets. We also threw out any clothes that we had been wearing while visiting Monty.

The floors we cleaned with bleach - 3 times just to be sure.

The lady we got the kittens from, was apologetic - but as mentioned in a previous post very difficult to get a hold of. She did kindly organize for us to get new kittens (ones that had not been in contact with her and her cats) from a private cat owner. These we received for free.

Concerning the vets bills, I had to chase her up quite a bit for this. I was being a bit too polite, as soon as I mad clear to her that we would be taking this further, she agreed to cough up and we have a payment plan in place.

On a really happy note, the two new kittens are VERY healthy and happy, if not a little mental As kittens are only 100% parvo immune after their 2nd shots, we were on edge for three weeks (this is why I have taken so long to reply). There is a definite difference in the two pairs of kittens we received, With Monty and Marley we wanted to get kittens that had basically been 'rescued' they were however sick, under nourished and basically feral looking. Roxy and Charlie came to us with full tummies, a shiny coat and lots of energy.

Re: Advice appreciated- Im allergic to my kittens

Hi Everyone,

I thought I would post this very difficult post in this thread as it originally shows some of the trouble I had been having. I'll explain below:

We have two beautiful thriving cats now, they are sisters and have the most amazing personalities and are super clever, we love them to bits.
I have had allergic reactions to them since having received them. I have kept this at bay for the last 1.5 years by cleaning our entire apartment thoroughly every day - that includes our duvets, curtains, sofa, chairs, floor, their cat trees also I brush them daily. It takes me up to an hour each day but has been worth it, they give a lot back.

Unfortunately I find myself in a situation where I am no longer able to upkeep my cleaning program and I am feeling it – I’m struggling to breath. I'm currently 9 months pregnant I cannot keep the cat hair under control (even though they don’t hair that much) anymore and I know if I am honest with myself that this will not be possible with our new born.
I have to think of myself and my baby and need to find a new home for Charlie and Roxy.

I thought I’d try this way first before the animal home where we wont know where and who they will end up with. If you are interested please continue reading below. Please no hateful posts, this has been a hard enough decision – I grew up with cats and believe they should be forever pets.

We would only consider giving them to the same home, they are sisters and best mates I don’t think they’ll do well apart.
The cats have been kept indoors with access to their own ‘cats paradise’ balcony. They are very curious though and I think will do well in a place where they have outside access.

Charlie Tiger– Born June 2010, castrated, has had all her vaccinations. Charlie is a beautifully timid cat, she is gentle and cuddly her favourite activities and eating, sleeping and snuggling. Her favourite game is sneaking up on her sister. She has gorgeous large round eyes.

Roxy White / tabby - Born June 2010, castrated, has had all her vaccinations. I’m not sure how to describe Roxy. Feisty and clever probably. She loves what we call ‘crazy cuddles’ and waits at the door for my hubby to get home to get her daily dose. She is very curious and even plays fetch! Her favourite toy is a little white mouse that has definitely seen better days but is much loved.

We’ve put a lot of effort into giving these two girls a happy and healthy home and so have the following to give with them:
2 small cat trees, 1 big cat tree, various cat beds. 2 cat litter boxes, 1 automatic cat litter box (that’s right…. It cleans itself!), various toys and a cat transport box.

We are giving the cats away - we just want them to be in a happy home where they will be well loved. I think they may be due for cat flu vaccinations soon, which we are happy to do before they go to a new home.

I apologise for the long post!! Please let me know if you would be able to take In Roxy and Charlie.

Re: Advice appreciated- Im allergic to my kittens

I'm sorry - but I just do not understand. You found yourself to be highly allergic and unable to breathe with the 2 kittens- so why on earth did you take on 2 new ones - and now want to give them up This is not hate post as you call it, but a serious and valid question, sorry.
I was so confused as the 2 cats you want to give away didn't look anything like the kittens mentioned in this thread.

Hi odile, thanks for your post. I can see how it may come across as a bit confusing. It's a very valid question. Our two original cats unfortunately passed away very very quickly due to a virus they had before we receved them. We recieved Charlie and Roxy very shortly after. I was able to keep the allergies under control with the cleaning and also I think I got used to them and so it wasn't an issue. What I didn't bank on is how I would react while pregnant (which was a surprise). And I have really tried to find any way to deal with it, this is a last resort. The cats have found an amazing home now, and will be joining their new family on Sunday, the family is very excited and we are very grateful. Skwiwi

Re: Advice appreciated- Im allergic to my kittens

Oh man, that's tough.

They are absolutely adorable. Well at least you've found them a good home. I was actually getting excited thinking maybe I could take them in until you found a new home until I read to the end.

I adore cats and would love to have a new companion (or two), but it's early days in Switzerland and I wouldn't be able to commit 10 yrs+ to a new moggy just yet. I must say I really miss having the company of a pet, having grown up with a menagerie of cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, tortoises etc.

Must look into pet sitting to get my fix.

Hope your goodbyes won't be too sad but you do have to mind your health, especially when you are expecting.

Best of luck.

Re: Advice appreciated- Im allergic to my kittens

Skwiwi, I admire your determination to have cats in your life, despite what you have to go through due to your allergies. I am sorry that due to your new baby you won't be able to keep Charlie and Roxy, and it is clear that the first one suffering is you and your husband after enjoying them for 3 years.

I trust you will find a lovely longterm home for Charlie and Roxy soon (they are both gorgeous), they will feel it weird at the beginning but they will get use very soon to the new home and start enjoying, specially keeping them together it will help them a lot.

Hope you will find a good home soon, and I wish you the best on your pregnancy.
