Help! LH says they won't take our dog cause kennel is one size too big!

We have two dogs, one that fits a size 4 kennel (large) and one that is in a size 5 (x-large) kennel, and Lufthansa has said they will not allow an x-large kennel on the flight. has anyone else been successful? should we just keep trying to call to see if we can get someone who says yes or how have people with dogs in xl kennels taken care of their dogs? we are coming from Canada so flying is a must...

You want your dogs to travel in the same plane than you? If you send them by cargo plane (ie no passengers on board), the restrictions are smaller.

When I sent my (tiny) dog from Porto to Geneva via cargo plane, the guy in charge explained to us how a month before they had shipped a gorilla to Brasil I guess your dog is smaller than a gorilla (at least I hope for you!), so it should be ok, no?

Without listing the dimensions of your crates in the post, it will be hard for anyone to compare experiences or offer solutions.

I flew both of my dogs in XL crates that were an approx LxWxH of 103cm, 69cm, 76cm on Swiss with no issues. I was only charged the rate of an extra bag for each dog. I wish you the best of luck with your trip.

So just to close the loop - I decided not to take a chance and took the kennels to the airport to ask them while they could see the kennels. they said no problem on the main trip, but the short haul trip could be problematic depending on if the plane was full, but they gave me a contact for someone if I had any problems at check in and they put a note on the file...so, long story short, the people on the phone go with the worst case scenario. All should be good now scary moment averted!

what about Giant crates/kennels?

along a similar line of questioning, i'm wondering if anyone has successfully flown their pet in a giant kennel as extra baggage instead of cargo?

i thought i was all set to fly delta until i realized my dog is an inch taller than the XL kennel standards and will need a giant crate. they only fly giant crates as cargo.

Please make sure you have everything in order. I originally booked a LH flight from Toronto to Zurich with my dog as excess baggage in an XL crate. Five agents said it would be fine. When I called to confirm the dog they said no go, she was too heavy. I argued until I was blue in the face that 5 ppl said no weight limit - they said I could go as far as checking the dog in but she would sit on the Tarmac because the union workers would not pick her up, she was too heavy.

I ended up driving to Montreal and booking a Swiss flight, they have no weight limit, or had none at that time. The cost was $350 to take her as access baggage.

Janer, thanks for the weight limit tip. I had not seen that info listed anywhere on the Delta page. Now I know to ask.

So far, after more digging and phone calls. it looks like we'll be paying to ship her cargo instead of excess baggage. A difference of $1500 .
