City/Town: Zürich
Event Type: Drinks/Bar
Meeting Point: Devi's Bar, opposite Wiedikon station

The Love Quiz will be like no other pub quiz you've been to. There are some normal quiz questions rounds, some activities you know and love from the treasure hunt and some secret ingredients. You'll need brains, brilliance and booze to win. Is it a pub quiz with interaction? A treasure hunt without the travel? You decide.
Devi's isn't very big and this is an experiment so I plan to limit the competition to 10 teams. These are all furry animals (bears, cats, dogs, horses, mice, rats, rabbits, monkeys, gorillas and sloths). Choose your favourite or the one that represents your team best. If you don't have a team, you can say which team you'd like to join, or just turn up on the night in hope.

If lots of people want to join we can either expand it somehow or repeat soon after.

As in the treasure hunts, you earn points (Beeros again) by getting right answers, drinking, bribery and skill at other activities.

RSVP'd Yes: 58 (11 members and 47 guests)
  • zwissmiss + 5 guests - Team Bears - reserved!

  • diggdog - Deffo a YES now. Going to the dogs if they'll take me. Devans, are you still in?
  • Country_Mouse + 1 guest - I am terrible at these things, but will prop up the end of a bar pretty well
  • Puzzler + 15 guests - Teams taken so far: bears, cats, dogs, gorillas, horses, monkeys, rabbits, rats, sloths (2). Available teams: mice.

Re: The Love Quiz

I did a little cameo appearance and then quickly dashed out again. I met Summerrain, Hasbrown and Nickatbasel...but then had to leave soon to catch the train back to Olten. I didn't see you either, where were you sitting?

Re: The Love Quiz

I've just cleared up the papers and can give you some stats. We had 8 teams. Most teams had some or all people experienced in the treasure hunts and/or pub quizzes. If you didn't get in the prize list it's no disgrace. There were some very smart people there.

In case you missed it the prizes went to:
1. Gorillas. Clear winners with a formidable all round performance, strongest in the answers and drinking elements, with full marks on the costume section. These characters are vastly experienced pub quizzers and top notch drinkers to boot. Bears made an unfortunate choice in choosing them as opposition in the drinking game.
2. Cats. The quiet team at the back scored highest by far in the estimates round and were strong on the questions. An unfortunate choice for sloths in the question shoot out.
3. Horses. Showed horsey stamina to come through strong in the later rounds.
A special mention for sloths (relatively new to such events), who rose from 7th at the half way stage to nearly take 3rd place, aided by full marks in the challenge. Also the brave monkeys, who drank nearly as much as the gorillas (hey, they are smaller).

I had a great time, thanks to everyone taking part. Once again you surprised me with your creativity and knowledge. I never thought you could do so many things with vegetables...

Many thanks to Ros and Aysun for looking after the beeros and very capable organisation. Big thanks too to applered for taking lots of photos as well as helping the horses.

Devi's came good again. Sabrina had 2 extra helpers, donated the drinking game beer and did me and some others in with the home made chilli vodka. The Peruvian tequila birthday present must have evaporated. Or did I forget passing some round? I thought 8 teams crowded together, all within shouting distance of the stage, made for a good atmosphere.

I thought the experiments went pretty well and the format was good. The estimates round produced wildly differing scores, which was the idea, and maybe expanded the sum of human knowledge (don't underestimate sheep). I enjoyed the revenge round, but would have liked to see the underdogs win.

Having teams as animals seemed to work well. Any suggestions for future events? Birds? Fish? Professions? Films?

Any feedback on the event? How can we make it better? Got some feedback already on the balance of questions. Anything else is welcome. Don't worry about critical comments, bring 'em on.

The organisation for this was not hard - a bit more effort than a normal pub quiz and a lot less than a treasure hunt. If you have a venue or event where you'd like such a quiz, let me know.

If you like more traditional pub quizzes you'll like the one in the Shamrock in Wollishofen every Sunday. I am guest quiz master there about once a month. The next one of mine will be on the 30th January. St. Joseph's (near Langstrasse) has a quiz 2 Saturdays a month and McGee's in Wiedikon has occasional Thursday quizzes.

Does anyone know of similar events elsewhere? I've research a bit on pub quizzes but never found anything quite like the Love Quiz.

Re: The Love Quiz

I am seriously humbled by the rest of my Gorillas to be able to down beer like that (I must have gone to the wrong uni!!), drink even more and answer the most ridiculously difficult questions. Sorry Bears, you really picked the wrong people to challenge drinking with.

The questions this time round were sadistic. The challenge rounds made me scream with laughter - special mention must go to the rabbits for their creativity with lots of vegetables. Once again, thank you puzzler, for yet another great night. The amount of effort that goes into these things is usually underrated. Look forward to the next one.

Re: The Love Quiz

A seriously BRILLIANT evening Puzzler! I laughed so much, met sooo many lovely people and generally remembered that Zurich can be a superb place when you get the chance to meet up with such characters and that chance was all thanks to Puzzler! (I knew my drinking practice at Uni would come in useful one day Great team Gorillas!!)
