15.05.2011 10:00 to 20:00
*The times shown may change, depending on DST settings
City/Town: Alsace, France
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: SBB Basel

Hi everybody.

We are going for an easy day out in Alsace, France. You will need a car / ride for this trip and a navigator. Please specify in the RSVP if you have a car / need a ride / have a ride. I will provide further directions and timings as we get closer to this event. I think it would be the best if we would meet at the parking space at the SBB Bahnhof and go together.

UPDATE: Let's meet at the parking place by Media Markt (SBB Bahnhof) around 9:45 so that we can hit the road at 10!

Where are we going?

We will start with a short tour in castle Haut-Koenigsbourg. This castle has spectacular view over the region, and on a (very) clear day you can see all the way to the Alps. This magnificent view was of course useful during the middle ages, but during the Thirty Years' War it was destroyed by the Swedes.
In the year 1900, while Alsace belonged to Germany, a German Emperor, William II of Hohenzollern, started the restoration of the castle. His goal was not only to rebuild the castle, but also to make it as a museum of the Middle Ages.
Entrance fee: 8 € - if we reach more than 20 people, then 6 €

After that we are going to the Monkey Mountain!
And that is fun children. It’s a park where more than 280 monkeys are living in total freedom in 24 ha of forest and meadow. You can get popcorn from the staff to feed them from your hand and you will learn about the monkey’s social behavior.
Entrance fee: 8.50 € - for a group: 6.50 €

We will then end in a tiny little town called Riquewihr (pronounced like Reykjavík).
If you like Colmar, you are going to love Riquewihr. We will wander around, grab a beer, eat some traditional Flammeküeche and enjoy ourselves. I could eventually arrange wine tasting if there is interest for that.

Can you think of a better way to spend your Sunday? I certainly can’t!

Re: A leisurely day in Alsace

Anyone fancy doing something slightly different?

Take train to Sélestat and cycle to Kintzheim (Monkey Park), then Riquewihr, then Kaysersberg and on to Colmar to take the train back.

As for the castle ... well, it's on a hill. So I might give that a miss

Re: A leisurely day in Alsace

Hey guys,

I did this route and the same trip last year. The castle tour was great and the view from the castle is spectacular. Try to get there on time for the tour in English.

The monkey mountain is great for little kids and right outside it there is a great picnic spot and a play area for the kids. We decided to pack a light picnic basket and after our tour of the monkey mountain which you can wrap in about 30 to 45 minutes you can watch the kids play and enjoy your picnic basket.

Alternative is of course to go into town to eat or pick up KFC in Colmar which is closer than Mulhouse I think. We picked up KFC on our way back.

All in all... A great trip to enjoy on a sunny spring day.

I have some flyers for other things to do if more people from the colmar-cooking are attending We can arrange that later on.
Would be fun if you'd join the Monkey Park though.

Great idea Begga.

We'll probably get a mobility car but I'm not sure how much space we'll have to take others once we've got the child car seat, pushchair etc in. We'll keep you updated!

Re: A leisurely day in Alsace

A monkey hint: don't wear a backpack when visiting- the critters think there is popcorn in there and have no fear... they will jump on you and try to find out what is in there.

Your schedule is quite full, but for the best Flammekueche (Alsatian Pizza) go to the Auberge de Campagne du Grand Ried, 4 rue de Wyhl, 67390 Mackenheim Tel: 03 88 74 92. They are open on for Sunday lunch and are about 20 minutes from where you will be.

Re: A leisurely day in Alsace

Thanks for organizing this.
Not sure where I will be on that day, but would like to join if I am in Switzerland.
Would also need a ride. If there are enough people, maybe we can rent a car?
I do not know if I am fit enough to bike

Re: A leisurely day in Alsace

For anyone doing a similar trip, "Eagle Castle" just down the road from Monkey Mountain is also worth a visit. They do a bird show a couple of times a day with eagles, vultures and an owl.

I always take my visitors on a day trip to these two.

Re: A leisurely day in Alsace

Do you think this is a good day out for an 11 year old? Hubby will be in Denver that weekend so I will be alone with him. It sounds like a great day out but I wouldn't want him to be bored as believe me a bored 11 year old is really not fun to be around.
I will have a car and 2 or 3 spaces depending on size of passengers.
