Meeting Point: Besancon, France

Hi,

what could be a better way to enjoy spring, than a weekend filled with culture, wine, art, partying and nature?

The trip plan is as follows:

We leave on Saturday, 16th April from lovely Basel

First stop is Lion de Belfort, a monument done by Bartholdi (same guy that made Statue of Liberty)

After that, we continue towards Besancon.

Besancon - an unknown capital - is the place worth visiting. Unknown capital, full of art, beauty and charm! See the review here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/200...ce-city-breaks

we will see the citadel, and afterwards the Museum of Arts, known as 'Little Louvre'. The museum has one of the best permanent collections, and, as luck has it, there's also an exibition of Charles Lapicque

After overdose of culture and history, we gather in the evening in a restaurant such as Le Poker d'As

"...The menu drips with regional delicacies, from pumpkin and comté soup to chicken cooked in the local sherry-like vin jaune. Ignore the bizarre decor - the food is great, with evening menus starting at €22. And if, like me, you tumble out on to the street after five courses, two Arbois wines and a digestif, you'll have done the owners, the Bisontins, proud. ..."

Some of more romantic ones retreat into thier chambres to continue drinking wine etcetera while party people continue to explore nightlife of 'Las Vegas of Alsace'.

Sunday morning:

After breakfast, we check out and go towards Osselle Cave

This is followed by a lunch in some of the nearby restaurants.

The final destination are gorgeous waterfalls:
http://www.interfrance.com/en/fc/na_wf.html

where we spend some time

After all of this we are heading home. General idea is to reach Basel by 19h.

The total cost of the trip should be approx 100 EUR per person. The accommodation is around 40, lunch 25, dinner 35. There may be some extras for museum entrance or cave.

Hope for a sunny weather, to make the trip perfect!
Cheers!

Thanks for organizing what looks to be a super weekend!

The hotel you recommended is filling up, so please make a final booking soon. Is there a group booking? To avoid any confusion I have already booked my double room with booking number 923.883.405 .

I have already made a reservation for 12 people in Citea Besancon. 4 x double, 1 apartment for 4 people.

should be sufficient. Plus Ittigen booked one extra double room.

I haven't confirmed breakfast (7.5 eur per person) to them yet.

Looking forward to this!!
Hope those still needing a lift will all be able to make it... can you club together for a hire car maybe?! I've no idea how easy it is though to be honest.

For those of you that haven't got a ride I would simply get the train. It goes from Basel to Besancon a bit quicker than a car anyway. The train station is pretty much in town - five minute walk through some gardens. You won't be able to go to the caves (just caves - nothing special) or falls (can't comment haven't been yet) but you will probably not feel like getting up Sunday morning anyway. And the town is quite nice Sunday morning - just go for a wander along the river.

This sounds fab, and I have a car so I could take a couple of people too. I just have to wait until closer to the date to see if my ears are going to explode again, in which case I could not come. So if it's ok, I'll spontaneously jump on board closer to the date.

A leisurely day in Alsace
Looking forward to meet you (and as a true viking; I am not afraid of sailing with you! hoi hoi)!
Hey cool. I will check out the dates, I hope to be around. We can ride together, yes, if you like some loud crazy music..

I would love to join as well! Coming in from Zurich! Let me know if I need to book a room, but it sounds like that might be taken care of?

hi stacy22,

welcome! I will send you all the details on PM.

There is a space for one more person; and there are some persons that are not sure yet. Work obligations, etc.

We have accommodation booked, plus the dinner in a wonderful local restaurant on Saturday evening. Rest is up to us!

Re: Weekend Trip - Franche-Comté/Alsace art, culture, wine and nature

A few tips:
1. The breakfast in Citea (7.5 Euro) is fairly basic, in Ibis next door the breakfast is much better (8 Euros)
2. The Visi pass might be worth looking into if going to 2 museums or more.
3. Make sure you have a booking for the "Poker d'As". If you can't get one - "Le Lucullus" is very nice.
4. Besancon is a lovely town - Enjoy !
