floating down the Aare

Hey there,

Before the weather turns too cold, I was thinking of doing the Swiss thing and float down the Aare to Bern (care to join me? Would love EF company!). I was thinking of starting off somewhere near Muensingen and end at the Marzili swimming pool an estimated 2-3 hours later (? wild guess)if the weather holds up this coming Sunday.

Questions: Anyone's done this before? Anything I should be aware of? I heard rumors of some rapids somewhere "between Muri and Thun" but no idea if that's before Muensingen or not, nor how bad they would be. Any other related tips very much appreciated!

Re: floating down the Aare

The rapids are at the bridge at Uttigen. Will dig out a map link. http://map.search.ch/uttigen. Ok, this is before Muensingen so it is only a problem for people starting at Schwaebis in Thun.

They are quite strong, it ups the level of the Aare trip to a class 2 I think. We were in a small boat and got lots of water but the 4 person boats are usually fine in this rapid. But many people start just after the rapids as there is a landing site there. If anyone was to start in Thun, you can rent life vests for 10 francs each at the Schwaebis landing site from a company that also rents out rafts and watertight barrels, which is handy for food and clothes.

From a kano site: (sorry but I won't translate this)http://www.kanubern.ch/wildwasser/fl...sse/aare1b.htm
Quote:
Flussverlauf:
0 Thun.
25,3
Links Freibad und Zeltplatz Eichholz. Günstige Ausstiegmöglichkeit.

Re: floating down the Aare

Cool. Thanks for the info. Looks like I'm fairly safe on Muensingen then. Never done this before so was a bit worried. . Still, when I saw all those people having fun on the Aare last weekend I thought: "gotta do that also!". Amazing how curiosity can drive away all fears...

Re: floating down the Aare

Just make sure you remember those last two bridges, and get out a few km after the wooding bridge, get out on the left at the camping site, which you recognize from a large colourful totem pole, or at Marzili. You do not want to float beyond into the Bern city waterfalls!

Re: floating down the Aare

Yup. Saw that when I was scouting around Bern last weekend. Last stop off at the swimming pool.
