Anyone interested in doing the Zürich Seeüberquerung?

On the 6th July, there is an opportunity to join a controlled swim across Zürichsee.
The distance is 1500m.
Start time is 14:30 and they send swimmers off in groups.
Finish time for the event is 18:45.
I am going to do it an if anyone is also interested in taking part and meeting up before. . . let me know.
The registration is on the day only and the cost is 20 CHF.
Further details are available on www.seeueberquerung.ch.
Obviously the organisers reserve the right to cancel if the weather is bad.

Re: Anyone interested in doing the Zürich Seeüberquerung?

Love this event! More of a fun-swim than some of the other lake-crossings, always been a very cool vibe in past years. Also a seamlessly organized one in terms of start times, logistics for your bags (a backpack or bag you can seal is best, no valuables) while you swim as well as food, drink and entertainment after.

I'll ask if I can get away from work earlier in the afternoon and let you know...

Just to add some details from the website: ticket-selling begins at 2:30 p.m. this year, a bit earlier due to record numbers last year, and the first swimmers start at 3:30 p.m. I believe they just keep letting people in until 6:45 p.m., which is when they stop selling tickets. The route's also 100 meters longer this year eg 1.5 km.

Back-up dates are 13 July and August 24 in case it rains on the 6th.

Re: Anyone interested in doing the Zürich Seeüberquerung?

It's a great event and I used to go almost every year. Not this year, because my fitness is like minus 10 on a scale.

Maybe next year.

Highly recommendable, though.

Eh, no they're not. From seeueberquerung.ch:
"Schwimmhilfen sind nicht zugelassen."

There's also a Facebook page for the lake-crossing here.

Shoot- we're leaving on the 4th for our family vacation. I was really looking forward to this. Maybe if it rains I can make one of the other dates.

Fancy floating down the Limmat for Limmatschwimmen in August? It's 2k but actually much easier because of the current.

I will most probably do this too, but will not be able to get out of work so early. I estimate that I will be doing it around 16:00-17:00 if I can still get tickets.

Re: Anyone interested in doing the Zürich Seeüberquerung?

I've done this event for the past three years. It's good fun and a great atmosphere. As others have said, it is really well organised too.

This year I'll be doing it fairly late on the day (I'll be the one swimming with a torch on my head...)

You don't need tickets in advance - just turn up and you pay your entry and get your kit there and then.

Re: Anyone interested in doing the Zürich Seeüberquerung?

I will be joining with a few expats this Wed (unless Seepolizei cancels it).
If anyone wants to join us, we will meet outside of badi Mythenquai at 16:30. If you want to join this group, send me a PM for phone number.

Re: Anyone interested in doing the Zürich Seeüberquerung?

This has just been postponed to next Wednesday, July 13, because the weather forecast's calling for storms this Wednesday:

Die Seeüberquerung muss aus Sicherheitsgründen um eine Woche verschoben werden, auf Mittwoch, 13. Juli. Auf diesen Mittwoch ist eine hohe Gewitterneigung vorausgesagt. Wir informieren Sie in einer Woche wieder.

More information on the website in a week.

I was in the lake at Mythenquai today and last week and it's not that cold once you're in.

Hoping to participate next week. Hubby and I will be exchanging the baby between our swims.

Any other mums/parents out there who would like to meet up for swims this summer and take turns watching the babies?!

They make a cut-off at (I think) 21C. If it's colder than that it gets postponed until it warms up a bit.

Re: Anyone interested in doing the Zürich Seeüberquerung?

postponed....again. From seeueberquerung.ch this morning:

Die Seeüberquerung muss aus Sicherheitsgründen verschoben werden, auf Mittwoch, 24. August. Auf diesen Mittwoch sind heftige Gewitter prognostiziert.

meaning due to severe thunderstorms forecast for Wednesday, the swim's postponed to Wednesday, August 24.
