City/Town: France
Event Type: Sports
Meeting Point: Col de Galibier

This year’s Tour de France features the highest ever mountain top finish for a stage.
It takes place on the 21st July on the famous Col de Galibier in France.
I will be going to watch this stage and would like to invite anyone else wishing to come, to join me.
As the expected crowds will be in hundreds of thousands – it is important to get there early in order to get a good viewpoint.
The usual form is that the road on the mountain is closed to traffic on the day of the stage (however cyclists are still allowed on the road, up to within a few hours of the Tour arrival time).
Therefore we need to be on the mountain on the Wednesday.
I propose to travel to Geneva by train either Tuesday night or very early on Wednesday morning – then pick up a hire car and drive down to the Col de Galibier.
On the way in there we would stop and buy enough supplies to last.
Then we would find a good spot and camp overnight.

The Thursday morning maybe hike up to the Aigilles d`Arves at 3510 metres?

So you need a small tent, a sleeping bag and some warm clothes – the stage finish is at 2645 metres and we will be a little way below that. . somewhere on a bend hopefully.
It does means taking 3 days off work – but is it worth it?
Well I can tell you that having been to the mountain stages on several occasions – seeing is believing.
In fact a sports journalist in the UK once wrote that anyone who claims to be a sports fan – of any kind – should at one time in their life experience a mountain stage of the Tour de France.
For a more detailed overview, see www.letour.fr

PM me if you want to come - then we should either meet up (if you are in Zurich) or call (if not) - to make some arrangements.
Cheers.

This sounds great! I wish I could come but I won't be able to get time off work.

Re: Tour de France mountain stage.

What an awsome day`s racing - unfortunately the police decided to close the access roads from North and South, early on Wednesday morning . . so my plans were scuppered . along with tens of thousands of others.
In the end we were all stopped 8km from the summit and so had a megga hike up on thurday morning and then all the way back down early evening.
One of the most memorable days in the Tour`s history for sure . . . but could have been organised better.
Next year . . . . .
