City/Town: Zürich
Event Type: Dinner
Meeting Point: BARANES. Zurlinden str 21.

The A-Z of dining is a regular once per month dining event - with the concept being that we `travel` through the alphabet, visiting different restaurants in Zürich. It is open to any EF member - especially new members! Partners and friends are also welcome.

H H HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAAAA . . . . . . no, it`s not easy to find an H.
So hard that I would drop it but my Dad said `Son, never drop you H`s `
Actually we did find a good Himalayan restaurant but it`s closed until the 23rd August and so I could not book it in time.
So what did we learn from the Greek experience? well we have to order at the stated start time and NOT wait for latecomers . . as we sat for 1 hour before we even ordered starters.
Back to this month - with no Hungarian, Haitian, Hebredean or any other H`s to be found in Zürich . . . I have exercised the organiser`s right of diversity and booked a table at a HEBREW restaurant.
In fact I have booked for 16 people at the BARANES Grill Restaurant on Zurlinden strasse 21, 8003, Zürich.
The date is thursday 25th August (closed fridays and saturdays).
Yeh, yeh, yeh it is a `school` day . . . . but . . whatever.
The time is 19:30 (not 20:00 or 20:30).
See the web link below and get booking!

Re: The A-Z of Dining in Zürich

I really want to be there, it would bring up very pleasant memories of the time I spent living in Israel and my many visits there.

As I said, I'll run it by my dad and see what he wants to do. Knowing the fellow, he might be more of a Zeughauskeller type

He is a great guy (and a talented chef), but an extremely picky/conservative eater, and he is fixated with the presentation of food on plates. My mom and I once convinced him to come to a top-notch dim sum restaurant in San Francisco - he was a good sport while there, but 2 years later we are still hearing him complain about the "weird food" he ate

Re: The A-Z of Dining in Zürich

Well 2 of us went along last night to check out the restaurant. Actually with booking for large groups (16+) I like to show my face as a matter of courtesy but we were also interested to see what it was like.
Although I had arranged with the owner that I would go last night - he forgot to mention that it would be closing early due to the fasting of Tisha B`av which this year began at sunset on August the 8th and finishes at nightfall on August the 9th.
This is a day of mourning to commemorate the many tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people.
I felt a little embarassed not knowing that
Having said that - the owner was very friendly and the restaurant looked great inside.
So I will try again to check out the food but in any case - I am looking forward to it.

Great choice Bash! I have always had good food when in Israel, so if this is anything like the "real thing" it will be a treat....

Re: The A-Z of Dining in Zürich

Mhk,

You can check out their website here, which is also in English. At the very bottom, you have the option of downloading the pdf version of their menu, which is in German, English, and Hebrew.

As you will see, there are a lot of vegetarian options, in the starters (hommous, eggs and vegetables, stuffed vegetables in spicy sauce), the soups and salads, potatoes cooked in various ways, rice, seasonal vegetables.

Although the main dishes all seem meat-based, I am sure that with a combination of starters (hot and/or cold), soup, salad, rice, etc. you won't starve.

Oh man, I wish I was there!!! Dad says "Zeughauskeller, please".

Sorry to miss out...

Re: The A-Z of Dining in Zürich

I will be at McGee's Pub from 18.30h for a beer or two, first drink on me.
5 min. walk from there to the restaurant. I'm the one not looking like a Prof.

Bash,
We have had a last minute change of plans, so we unfortunately can't make this one anymore. Sorry for the late(ish) notice..

Enjoy, and can't wait to hear how the food was.

Thanks for that - a nice small group and it made a change to be able to talk to everyone .
Having said that it must be the most bizarre meal that we have had yet. An odd assortment of meals on offer but the service WAS very friendly and that is worth remembering.
Next month - we stay safe with a good old I.
Thanks for coming people.

Re: The A-Z of Dining in Zürich

Thank you basher for organising.

Quality of restaurant? Not too bad. Quality of guests? Can't beat it.

Icelandic Kitchen? Smoked Troll

People subscribing and not showing up are just disrespectful and should be banned
from further events.
