| | Motorcycle Ride Outs: possilble ride out to Col D'Iseran
I am thinking about a trip over http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Col_de_l%27Iseran, the highest paved road in the Western Alps, towards Cannes before the high passes close. This might take in both the St Bernard passes depending on time/ incliniation and the run down the Doubs from Switzerland to Geneva again depending on time/ inclination
Message if interested... The start point would be Basel

Chris | | | | | Traditionally slow to respond... I was thinking perhaps one of the weekends in September, not the 1st since I am travelling, but any other.

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong places, but google maps gives me a round trip from Basel, via Colde l'isle of 760km back to my place. Are you thinking of a weekend trip or a day trip??

Day 1 down to Geneva, overnight in Fernay Voltaire
Day 2 Over Col D'iseran and probably to Turin
Day 3 back over St Bernard/ Simplon and possibly Grimsel and sustenpass
Thats the idea

Ah, now I understand. That means I'm out, as getting 3 days off in a row is almost impossible. I'd avoid Simplon pass if you can. Matt and myself came back from Italy middle of July that way, big road works at the top.

from geneva, it sounds like you are folowing the route des grande alps.. if so I would avoid the first section, just hit the n40? and then pick it the RDGA around cluses - its a looong day to Iseran from there tho.
As an overnight in italy I stayed at a hotel in Bardonecchia - i would really recommend going on the col de finnistre and col de assietta - its a mix of tarmac and hard pack gravel that any road bike can easy do, the views and experience is great. col de assietta road is closed on a weds and a saturday BTW

pah,
I did that in a day from Neuchatel ...
On a buell
with tyre pressures of 20 psi (whoops)
And a heavy thirst in oil ...
In one piece leathers ...
It was great ! |

OK I am thinking of the weekend of 23-24th sept with a Friday off. If we make our way down to Martingy we could rendevous at teh Rastplazt Gurtnellen on the A2 then head over Susten, Grimsel down to Martigny and over St bernard to Aosta. That puts us in a good position to head over Iseran and south on the French passes as we agree, Day three would then be head back. Let me know thoughts on this

Well I will come down from Basel. I am proposing an early star from Rheinfelden and am offering brekkie to anyone who tells me in advance. Probably an 8 O'clock kickoff from the stork tower car park and take in the wintersingen/ sisscah pass and Hauenstein on the way to Luzern. (It is actually quicker than the motorway...)
