City/Town: Basel
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: Brausebad (Bus 50 stop to airport)

I'll be doing my typical Saturday morning shop.

Cycle from Basel to St Louis and go to the Farmers' market. Then on for a coffee & cake, and finally to the Geant/Casino supermarket before cycling back.

Or take the bus from Schifflande to St Louis (get off at the stop called "Carrefour"). The market is a two minute walk to the East, past the Post Office on Rue de Hunningue.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=...ra=ls&t=h&z=18

The total amount of cycling is around 8km so very easy!

Bring Euros (or a card which works in French ATMs) and some ID, not that I've ever been asked to show it.

Meet at 11:30 sharp (I will leave at this time) at Brausebad, Basel by the bus 50 stop (airport direction). Or meet at the market from around 11:45.

As the owner of this event is there any function in this forum which allows me to send a message to every RSVP "yes" and "maybe"?

The biggest differences you'll see on the "olives", meat (of course) and pasta stalls - one can actually afford the fresh pasta on a wages less than 120 k CHF pa.
Can't go - daughter's birthday party...
Carlos, there are daughters around the world, who would just love to casually announce at school on a Monday "Oh, it was my birthday so Dad took me to France."

By the way, is it possible to live in Switzerland on less than 120k CHF pa????

Re: Shopping by bicycle in St Louis

Thanks everyone for coming! I got loads of fruit, some excellent lamb and of course cheese, cakes and bread. And, at the current exchange rates, it's all a bargain.

Definitely great prices and selection - we just ate some great cheese, bread and salad and have enough goodies for the rest of the week. I think we need to do that a couple times a month.

Re: Shopping by bicycle in St Louis

Unless it's raining (or we try somewhere further afield such as Carrefour in Mulhouse) I'm happy to cycle. As I live on my own, I can fit all I need onto the panniers on my bike. However, we can do the same again. The other cafe should have re-opened by then, too.

Re: Shopping by bicycle in St Louis

Well, I've eaten almost everything I bought so need to re-stock. Plus I'm having a picnic at 3pm so where better to get stuff for that from than the farmers' market and geant supermarket!

Same deal. 10:30 at Brausebad for the cyclists; 10:45 at the market for the rest.

Re: Shopping by bicycle in St Louis

Aaaand again. I'm not normally in Basel three weekends in a row, but with weather this good it'd be silly to leave.

So .... this coming Saturday, 10:30 at Brausebad for the cyclists and from 10:45 at the market.

My favourite cafe has re-opened which is a bonus!

Re: Shopping by bicycle in St Louis

We'll be in Edinburgh this weekend - sorry to miss the yummy blueberry tart but very excited to be eating Fish and Chips and seeing live bands - and NOT jazz!!! And the end of the Fringe Festival of course.

And I'll be baking peanut butter, oatmeal chocolate chip cookies - without any trouble in finding ingredients

If Geant has the triple chocolate slices - I highly recommend them.

Re: Shopping by bicycle in St Louis

Weather will be cool and dry tomorrow morning (theoretically!) so this little trip is still on. Should be 4 of us cycling (meet Brausebad 10:30) else meet us at the market (10:45 onwards).

Re: Shopping by bicycle in St Louis

Forgive me for this if I am way off base, as I have been here for one week: Didn't my mountain of assimilation papers mention that a Basel tram goes to St. Louis? If true, does it let off near the market? Thanks and the EF is a great resource!

Re: Shopping by bicycle in St Louis

Tram 11 to the end (St-Louis Grenze), walk in same direction over the border until the major crossroads (10 minute walk). Turn right, one minute walk and market is on your left.

Or bus from Schifflände (it's a French bus - the only one there, so easy to spot - pay cash in Euros to the driver) to a stop oddly called Carrefour (as there's no Carrefour there! Crazy French).

Well worth it Rew, and good company. Adrian, remember "epaule d'agneau, coupee pour les brochettes"! Anyone out there with good French feel free to correct! Wish I could come but doing the airport run to pick up visitors. Maybe next weekend?
