| | Re: Highland Games in St Ursen, Canton Fribourg
Thanks Ittingen for posting this. Just a little more info.....
The games are held in the village of St Ursen which is about 10 or 15 mins drive from Fribourg. There will be a double decker shuttle bus from the Fribourg BH direct to the games. The games have until now been free to enter but with the recent years successes, they have grown to the size where professional marshals are needed so they are charging a fee of 10.00 chufs for entry.
IMO, these are the most serious and largest of the (many) Highland Games in Switzerland and the folk who organise it are some of the friendliest folk I have met here. I run a Scottish cheese tent near the entrance (last year Richard came with his Pie Oven... not sure if he is coming this year but I'll find out and post soon) and I sell cheese to take home but also serve my infamous Whisky Rarebits and Hot Toddies to eat and drink there. This year I may also have Port & Stilton plates.
There is plenty to see and do and eat and drink throughout the day and in the evening there are a number of live bands playing in the main tent. The games finishes on Sunday afternoon with a massed band of Pipers which is pretty stirring!
If you'd like to join up with some other EFers... I suggest 4pm on Saturday or 2pm on Sunday for drinks at my tent. Bring along a beer from the bar... but I'll also serve free Hot Toddies to any EFers who make themselves known. If anyone fancies helping me for an hour or two (I'll be on my own and will need an odd loo break) there will be free food and beer from me!
So, if you sign up, indicate which day you'd like to meet and it may influence others. Last year we had groups from as far afield as Zurich, Glarus and Lausanne.
More info on the home page (French and German only) or please ask questions here.

Just to say, an ex-rugby colleague of mine is competing in the games this year. He came 10th overall on his 1st attempts last year. So please cheer for Gerhard Bachmann from Wichtrach!
Hopp Geru!
(I almost considered it myself this year, but
a) I don't possess a kilt and
b) I don't think my back/hip/knee would take the strain)
PS We might even potter along Friday evening or Sunday evening, just to introduce ourselves to Mike and get our free hot toddies |

I'll be arriving around noon on Friday and will be up and running by about 4. Hope to see you then Paddy for a few warming Hot Toddies - showers are forecast for the Friday but it looks good for Saturday and Sunday.
And it looks like Richard will be there with his pies |

Ok a naive question. If i will come i will come by myself. So if i get the train to Fribourg then a nice bus will pick me up and take me to the games. Then when i decide to leave, the same bus will take me back to the station. How do i find this bus is my question?

Sorry about that, usually the information is there, but this year it is only in German! And even then there is no bus number 127!
I believe it will be the Post Bus 127 at the Fribourg station (keep walking after platform 6, follow signs) and not the TPF bus shown in the picture! (Maybe there is a TPF special bus leaving from south side of station, but I cannot find any information) http://www.highlandgames.ch/upload/d...s_fribourg.pdf http://www.fahrplanfelder.ch/fileadm...011/20.127.pdf
You can also search www.cff.ch for the bus which leaves Fribourg main station towards Plaffeien. You need to get off after St Ursen Dorf, at Highland Games stop, St. Ursen, Struss. journey time is 13 minutes.
I have sent the organisers an E-Mail, so I hope to have a more concrete answer before Friday!
me thinks going back shouldn't be a problem.

The free red double decker "Glasgow" bus runs from Düdingen SBB station to St Ursen, which is definite, you can buy the bus ticket for CHF 10,.. which includes the entrance to the games, http://www.highlandgames.ch/upload/p...port_gross.png
The Transport Publique Fribourg bus TPF no. 127 runs towards Plaffeien, I am trying to get definitive answers on where it leaves from and the bus stop for Highland Games. (Organisers told me bus 313 which is the journey number!) http://cartes.tpf.ch/horaires/horair...&d=1&arr=a2021
(Bizarrely there is also a Post Bus numbered 123 that leaves at exactly the same time!)
(I have had no reply yet from TPF about where the bus leaves from, either the north underground bus station, or the south side of the railway station, on the open street)

Cost was 5chufs in the past, but I've heard that because of the charged entrance, that the buses are for free this year (but don't hold me to that).
They pick up and drop off in the depot yard, right outside the entrance, so you can't miss them. There's only two or so different runs, and I think there's a paper in the front window giving destination (or ask the driver).
Check your program booklet (given at entrance) for departure timetable. I should get one in the post box this week, so I'll have a look.
I'm sure this info is available on the website, but haven't had/got time to check (I'm packing and moving - don't tell the "boss" that I'm piddling about on the internet instead of loading boxes).

For all people who want to travel by public buses (TPF) from Fribourg to St. Ursen. Please note: There is a special, temporary stop "Highland Games"!
You will find the timetable and much more information on our website Highland Games

Their picture is of a TPF no. 265 bus to Bulle, not the TPF number 127 bus to St Ursen. And from where does the bus leave at Fribourg railway station? The north underground car park, or the south sunny side street?
TiMow has thrown a spanner in the works by stating there are blue and white buses, maybe in previous years but no mention of them this year. The red bus from Düdingen railway station is to be recommended. | This user would like to thank for this useful post:

Agreed: the town buses leave from the front and the TPF regional and Post buses leave from the underground bus station. But where, please in black and white, hard facts, does the shuttle bus to the Highland Games leave from? Is a 13 minute journey regional or town ?

I got the bus there two years ago. It was from the underground section.
The article that I posted earlier mentions that there will be signs directing people to the Higland Games bus.

Regional buses: underground bus station
The 13mn journey is with a regional bus.

Thanks
So im more confused now. I go from Geneva to Fribourg. I ask around to find the bus on the DP post which leaves every one and a half hours so if i miss it then im in trouble.
Is there any other way to go? Taxi and stuff?

As far as I know you can get a regional bus to St Ursen.... ask the driver for the Highland Games, the games are just beyond the (small) town centre. I'll PM you my handy number so you can call me if you get lost!
