City/Town: Elm GL
Event Type: Other
Meeting Point: Truppenlager Elm (see map)

Anybody want to join us for an Alpabzug this Sunday? It's the annual cows-with-flowers-on-their-heads parade - and this being Glarus it is combined with the annual cheese and Schabziger market.

While there'll be various other stuff going on throughout the day (music, pig races etc.) the parade itself starts at 2pm. I've set the event for 1pm so that we'll have time to grab a bite to eat first.

Entry to the market is free, food and drink as well as various local products available for purchase. I don't know exactly what's on the menu, but Röschti was certainly mentioned, as was Alplermagrone - and (again, this being Glarus) I would expect there to be various Adler beers, Coke, cider and coffee on hand to wash it down with.

In addition there'll almost certainly be either noodles or pork steak with Schabziger butter, but be warned... this stuff is famously an acquired taste. (If you ask nicely I might let you steal a bite of mine first, to see whether you like it. )

Beautiful weather for it this weekend - guaranteed 'nebelfrei'! - so come on out and enjoy a real Swiss tradition in the heart of Swiss cow country.

Location: Elm is about 1h45m outside of Zürich by public transport (train to Ziegelbrücke, train to Schwanden, bus up to Elm.) Note that the nearest bus stop is Elm, Station; do not continue all the way to Elm, Dorf (well, you can if you want but it's an 800m walk back.) Once you get off the bus, you'll see the Truppenlager immediately; in fact, it's the only thing around.

Here's a map: http://map.search.ch/d/zg4ywvkzj

Lovely idea! If we hadn't already made other plans, I'd come up with my children to remind them what real cows look like

Next time, perhaps.

Re: Cow Parade and Smelly-Green-Cheese-fest

Weather forecast looks good - roll on the Alpabzug! Just a note, Elm is at 977m so layers are always a good idea. I think max temperature tomorrow is supposed to be 18 degrees.

DB and I will be catching the 12:05 train from Ziegelbrücke, so we'll probably see most or all of you on the train. I'll PM my number to those who've RSVPed, just in case.

Oh, and for those who don't have to rush off immediately... drinks round ours afterward?

See you tomorrow!

MN

Re: Cow Parade and Smelly-Green-Cheese-fest

A glorious day - thank you MathNut for organising. Lovely to meet "old" faces and new again, and it was great that the children got along so well.

Cheers, BigBlues for the drinks - and hope you all had a safe journey home.

Re: Cow Parade and Smelly-Green-Cheese-fest

Well, that was fun. I have to confess I was slightly disappointed in the number of cows (33, was it? 34? meanwhile there were at least 20 slackers grazing peacefully and unadornedly in the nearby fields) but then they turned around and came back up the same road, so we got to see them twice. So that was all right.

Thanks to all who made it, it was great to see you. A special shoutout to the Pied Piper (he knows who he is ) and to Mr. and Mrs. Bigblue for hosting the after-party.

What a lovely day! It was wonderful to meet you all, although I'm glad to finally give my voice a rest after all that story telling...

A special thank you to Mr and Mrs BigBlue for the very pleasant wind down at the end.

Sorry, when I wrote earlier, I forgot to thank the BBs. Lovely to be able to sit for a bit and chat at your place - which reminded me so much of one of my places.

Re: Cow Parade and Smelly-Green-Cheese-fest

Thank you all for a lovely day! We brought our wellingtons as we were expecting to walk thorough lots of cow dung but not quite the case.

Thank you to the BB family for welcoming us into your lovely home.

DB, the little one is asking to meet you again for another story..

Thanks to Mathnut for arranging this, we all had a great afternoon and it was really nice to meet everyone who came along. Jenna (the big dog) sulked for a while after you all left.

Re: Cow Parade and Smelly-Green-Cheese-fest

Sorry for not appearing again - I eventually found the rest of the posse - but we headed up the road a bit to watch the beauty parade.

I have 100+ photos to sort through this evening (only got back to Zurich this morning)!

I saw your place BB as we drove down.

Mr BB here

Great to meet everyone, now you can see why we don't live in zurich

We'll have to arrange something for when the snow starts, which going by last year could be anytime this week
