Nice language btw. We really missed that in Swissbob's posts. (Does he count as one of the "divas" or did he just "flounce"?)

Long live EF! | | | | | You were new to EF yourself, once, DB. Who knows, GC may be the new Weejeem. Or may even be Weejeem ...

| | Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local) | Quote: | | | | | It's people who are more interested in themselves than the community who are making the most noise. Some Members have managed phenomenal post / rep / thanks count while delivering very little useful information on life in Switzerland. Curious, eh? There was a time when such towering heros - long before such status symbols were displayed - spent their online hours helping other people with their problems and concerns. (I blame Facebook for making the internet selfish.)
| | | | | People still find help and emotional support on the EF. It’s amazing in this respect.
Is it mutually exclusive with humour and lightheartedness, though? I must say that having a good laugh reading this forum has been very helpful to me. I need these towering heroes that you mention to brighten up my day.

Well I guess some are more equal than others.

| | Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local) | Quote: | | | | Actually, not in my case. I don't care about the new terms and conditions. I'm not bothered by the commercial direction the forum is taking. I could quite easily attend the drinks meeting in Zurich. But I won't, because I believe that having a drinks meeting in one town in Switzerland, which a maximum or forty, maybe fifty people could realistically attend, is exclusive and goes against the spirit of an online forum which is frequented by people all across Switzerland and beyond.
The needs of the wider forum would be better served by Paul committing himself to being available here on the forum at a particular time on a particular day, where every one of the 60 000 or so members of EF would be able to ask him questions, make suggestions or just read what he has to say.
A cosy drinks session at which an insignificant proportion of the community have the opportunity to bend his ear is just a grand - but ultimately pointless - gesture.
But I'm just a selfish mardy arse, so don't mind me. | | | | | actually, there is already a question thread. where people can put questions directly to paul. this is something separate.

But will it actually help community cohesion?
Shall we ask the 59 970 members who won't be attending?

I think it's pretty clear.
As much as a small and incomplete effort that the drinks can be, it's an effort still.
Webmeeting, tweeting or chatting (dont we have chat here?) is also necessary for the sake of those who can't assist. ->If anyone still has an issue with this please clearly state it in a propositive manner and leave the drinks alone.
discouraging a person on drinks alone , it's kinda sad... regardless of why the event organizer is doing it.
That being said, as forum a forum norm I expect EB to be there as he created the event.

What have I done for my community today..? It's getting a bit tiresome DB. As a mod on a rival site your baiting whilst hypocritically declaring you're passed caring doesn't help your 'argument'.
I don't know what to believe when you scribble around looking for stimulation / answers / attention. I'm not sure it's the benefit of the community TBH. Your point has been made and I'm sure noted.
Have a good afternoon everyone.

If the management of the English Forum hadn't been so dismissive of alternative points of view, had actually bothered to communicate properly with the membership over the last three years, had actually shown some ongoing leadership instead of diving in at the last minute with some kind of damage limitation exercise, then the other forum would probably have never existed in the first place, and you'd have been obliged to think of a more intelligent response to my comments.
Must be nice to know you can always revert to "Yah, boo sucks! You're a member/mod/supporter of that other forum na na na I'm not listening."
I would have expected better... two days ago.
Unfortunately, Editor Bob has clearly set the tone for any further discussion on the subject of the future of EF.
