Secondary point perhaps Paul could take down the concerns from the Zurich meeting and post replies on the forum for all to see.
Might be nice if this could be a regular event. |

Is the English Forum for a tiny clique of Zurich residents or German speakers, or is it for everyone who wishes to be part of it, regardless of where they live in Switzerland?

| | Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local) | Quote: | | | | I live close enough to Zurich to make it for an evening out, but I shan't attend.
The problem is that having an officially organised event which only a tiny percentage of the membership can attend merely reinforces the cliquey feeling about which so many members - especially those located far from Zurich - have complained over the last few years.
It's one thing for an EF member to organise Wednesday drinks at the Viaukt, to which some chap from Sweden happens to turn up. Quite another to organise a "Drinks evening (with the founder of the local)" in Zurich, to which the overwhelming majority of people who might be interested in hearing what the founder of the Local has to say for himself will be excluded merely because they don't happen to live in or near the city.
Switzerland is remarkable for its lack of centralisation. In the confederation, Zurich is no more important than Bern, Basel, Geneva, Lausanne or Lugano.
It's a shame the English Forum doesn't observe the same principle.
Have your drinks with the Zurich in-crowd. Enjoy yourself!
But don't forget that there are an awful lot of people on EF who will be feeling left out in the cold because of this. | | | | | Well, the idea was to have something in Basel on Thursday night if there was enough interest but I'd be happy to do it in any of those cities on Thursday instead. Zurich and Basel are where the majority of the members are based though, so like I said, that didn't seem unreasonable.

I'm with mirfield and catalyst on this one. This is a good effort on their part (small if that is how you want to think about it, but an effort still)and should be supported.

Erm perhaps we should start a single thread minus rants with just questions on specifically for that meeting. Everyone can contribute then. | The following 4 users would like to thank for this useful post: | |

as for Paul coming all the way from Sweden.... errr... he's the one that owns this ( for profit ) enterprise

Weirdly enough, requests to retrieve my password do not reach my email though.
Will probably not attend, as I wish to be fresh and clear headed enough to get drunk on Thursday evening.

| | Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local) | Quote: | | | | | I think that's a bit harsh DB. They're trying to make an effort. It's not practical for them to be there for every member of the forum, but Zurich covers a good few of them. Perhaps Geneva might have been a better second choice becasue of the distance, but to just dismiss the whole thing seems a bit mean spirited, and unlike the usual pragmatic DB we all know and love. | | | | | You are totally right. This is how the forum is so practical. One can actually post and reply directly in here for everybody to participate and get the informations straight. If an event want to be made, I have no problem with that but first things first and let's make things right.
The Local has a communication problem. Having an event in one or two cities won't fix the communication issue. But being on THIS forum and participating actively to answer questions and concerns will. | Quote: | | | | A regular internet presence from someone who actually gives a **** about this forum would be nice. | | | | | Voilà!

As for the way we implemented the T&Cs - it was a bit silly of us not to post about it first. What happened was this: we asked a lawyer in Germany about some changes to the impressum - and added the open question 'is there anything else we should think about' that is probably best to be avoided when talking to lawyers.
| | | | | Come on guys.....who is giving the guy neg rep? He had red until I just corrected it.
You wanted to meet. He's flying here to meet. You wanted explanations. He's offering them and admitting it wasn't done well.
What the hell more do you want?

What the hell more do you want? | | | | | Yeah I green rep the guy too. Even if only to give him the benefit of the doubt.
I agree with the concern that there is a lack of communication between the Local and us;Giving Paul grief about the event is in No way helping that.
I think it has been duly noted that a thread, and answering questions here is also required.

| | Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local)
My observation having now read the terms of use would be as follows.
Paul, if youre coming over to Zurich and want to meet up with some EFfers for a beer, its fair enough and it wouldnt be any different to a beer and burger lunch in Geneva in terms of the use of the discussion.
However, I do find it a bit on the feeble side to pass those legally enforceable terms off as simply" oh we only did it cos the lawyers told us to" - I personally don`t believe you and your partners are that naive.
It is clear from all the comments that EFfers want to have a chance to discuss this and they may have misunderstood your intentions , hence the request for minutes of a presumed official meeting.
I would suggest that if you expect the members to take the terms of use seriously then you should respect their request for dialogue as well and provide an adequate means for all of us to express them , a debate without which, will leave some members still unsure of your motives.
Thanks

I don't agree sometimes a face to face produces better results than a load of rabid expats with loaded questions on an EF thread.
Yes we have concerns over an awol Administrator, they will be raised by me if I am there. We'll see maybe I can't make it. If and when I confirm. I will take any concerns to the horse's mouth.
As I said someone start a thread with just questions for Paul, perhaps it will give Paul time to prepare answers to post back to EF.
If I have to minute it I will
***Third Time***
It would help me if people start a thread with just questions as they would start the basis of a set of minutes...

| | Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local) | Quote: | | | | | I don't agree sometimes a face to face produces better results ......... | | | | | yes a face to face would be nice... but so far the only face-to-face on the table is one in Zurich ( with 3 people currently confirmed ) and vague offers of future events.
once again this is a forum... the forum concerned... where questions could be answered
was it you said there should be a separate thread away from the stick and stones here ( and kudo's to Paul.. he did answer my question even as GrumpyGit pointed out.. "perhaps" rather naively tossing it back on to the lawyers )
