Geneva stinks, there I said it.

On a more serious note, Pauly, do you think you can come to Olten..like that it's more central to everybody and more people would be able to come see you....and you wouldn't have to do multiple trips to various cities.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally welcome Paul to the forum.

Perhaps Paul could write a short introduction for us so we could get to know him a bit better since he's only accommodating our Zurich brethren in his trip.

We are certainly not going to turn down any communication line that The Local throws our way

Hey DB, if you're too scared to come out in the real world, cuz your magical powers are useless there, that's fine.

But to piss on the owner of a free service that scarily provides you with your identity and who has graciously invited us out for drinks is much too revealing.

Put it in your panties and come out for a drink.

I find the avatars from ouch and db slightly misleading at the moment. For a couple of seconds there I thought DB hat flipped considerably and was answering himself.

I must say, I prefer DB in the real world over the online DB...the man must have a reason for not wanting to attend...can you all stop acting like a bunch of 4 year olds.

Us = those who can be in a bar in Zurich at 18:30 on a week night, which excludes almost all of the forum.

I know the EF began in Zurich, and I know there's a really solid and supportive hardcore of supporters of the EF who live in and around Zurich, but the EF is much bigger than that now.

That's my point. I'm sure he's a nice bloke and all, but to organise a little cosy chat with a tiny minority of the forum in a bar in Zurich really isn't the way to inspire confidence amongst the membership of a forum that now numbers several tens of thousands of people living throughout the country.

See Grumpygrapefruit's post above for a more intelligently written version of my argument if its my writing style to which you object.

Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local)

It is good to see that The Local are finally taking notice of members' concerns. It is such a shame that it is about a year too late.

I raised this point in a thread at the beginning of the year and by email to Paul and had replies from other staff in relation to this.

This is a quote from an email that I received on 8th February 2011

Quote:
You're certainly right about the distance between the management and the community members. We've worked hard to try to modernise the forum and make it self-sustaining, but perhaps we haven't communicated with members as frequently and clearly as we should have done.

To a certain extent, I think this is the nature of the enterprise that we have set up here. The Local is ambitiously trying to create a network of local sites throughout Europe. But despite all the tools of modern technology there isn't the same personal connection as if we had staff based in each country. We hope to rectify this in the medium term - perhaps within the next year.

The question is what to do until then. I think your suggestion of a user panel is a good one. Currently it is the moderation team that tries to perform this function. I know that they offer lots of helpful advice within the private moderator's subforum. Usually it is the moderators who are the interface between community and the management. But the majority of members don't see this. So maybe the process needs to be more open and public. We will think through the options.
Should EF have a 'User Panel'

The current issues are not the first example of the appalling communications by The Local. I hope that this time there will actually be some meaningful dialogue.

Obviously, the meeting cannot involve more than a small percentage of the membership. It needs to be part of a broader means of communication to EF members. I look forward to a new period of open communication from The Local.

I also agree that Olten may have been a better location to meet.

Re: Drinks evening (with founder of The Local)

He can't be in all places at once. He's started in Zurich, has said Basel is a possibility, ..., give the man a chance before dismissing the entire gesture.

But even if otherwise ... There's no expectation on meeting the dude. He happens to be in Zurich and invited people to meet. What's wrong with that?

Economisto, your bile and bigotry is one of the reasons I don't visit the forum.

I objected to people dissing an honest gesture from someone to meet. Dissing decorated with the usual pettiness.

You're very mistaken, Sir. I've organised and attended many events. If you want to bash me, I am happy to take it, but please get your facts straight.

It's an exclusive gesture in response to a much wider problem.

His answers on Grynch's Q&A thread will do more to inspire confidence amongst the wider forum than this cosy drinks session.

The problem lies with an online forum - surely the solution lies also online?
